Battle Creek Yankees at Kane County Cougars

May 1st, 2004

The Cougars must be slipping, they only scored seven runs against Battle Creek. That is instead of the 20 and 10 they have scored the previous couple of games. Some how they are finally scoring runs early in the game and not leaving it all up to the last two or three at bats to win the game, or to even get into the game. Unfortunatly they havent learned to score through out the game, leaving them selves open to a late rally by their opponents for a win.

Chris Dunwell was subperb again in winning the game, and remaining undeafted in his Cougars career. He went the first six innings, giving up only one run. The good news is he didnt walk any one and struck out six. He did get into trouble a couple of times though.

In the fourth is when the Yanks scored their run. With one out Erold Andrus singled to left, then stole second. One out later The Yankees first round pick from last year, Eric Duncan doubled to left to score Andrus. The other time he got into some trouble was the next inning. Hector Made led things off with a single to left. One out later, Tommy Rojas homerd to right. Only problem for the Yanks was it went foul. He would end up reaching saftley on a fielder's choice. On the play Made would be out at second, it would've been a double play but the throw for short was low. Rafael Rodriguez then singled to left. The inning would end when Bryce Kartler struck out.

The Cougars scored five of their seven runs in the first two innings, and all their runs before the sixth. In the first, Brian Ingram walked. One out later David Castillo would also walk. After Eddie Kim was caught looking, Brian Snyder doubled to center to score both runners. Dustin Majewksi then followed with a single to left to score Snyder.

Two more runs in the second inning lead off by Chris Tritle hitting his first homer of the season onto the deck in left field. Two outs later Luke Appert doubled to right. Castillo then doubled to right to score Appert. More fun in the fifth for the Cougars when they scored two more runs. Majewski lead off with a single to left. David Harriman then hit one that went in and out of the glove of the left fielder, for a double. It would score Majewski from first. Tritle and Rogers would both ground out to short, for the first two outs. The accumilation of those plays would be Harriman getting to third. With a two and two count on Ingram, the Yanks pitcher Heath Castle threw a wild pitch that would allow Harriman to score.

The score could've been worse. Int he third inning the Cougars had Snyder get a leadoff single, on out later Harriman singled to center. A fly out and a ground out would end that inning. In the fourth with two outs, Castillo walked, Kim would then single to center, to put runners on the corners with two outs. Snyder would then be caught looking. The sixth inning saw Appert leadoff by reaching on an error by the first baseman Urick. Castillo then doubled to left. Ont he play Appert would be tagged out at the plate. In the eighth inning with two outs. Appert doubled one over the head of the centerfielder. Castillo then walked. Kim owuld fly to center to end the inning.
