The Cougars win a thrilling game today as they now have a two game winning streak. In this
game the Cougars took the early lead, then mistakes looked like they would cost them, but. In
the end they came from behind to win. The bullpen was great. Jon Asahina and Kevin Cave pitched
hitless baseball, for five and one thirds innings.
Jeff Fulchino just was wild and hittable today as he had his shortest outing of the year. He went into
the fourth inning, but that second inning realy cost him. He allowed seven hits, he gave up three of those
hits in both hte second and the fourth. In the fourth Jeff gave up a monster homer. Fulchino walked three, this
is the third time in a row, in his six starts that he gave up three runs or more. In his first
three outing he didn't give up more than two. This was also the first time all year that he had
hit a batter, today he hit two of them in two innings. Fulchino did get grounders in two of his
three innings to get out of the inning.
The Cougars defense must've missed the bus to Dayton today as they commited many errors, and
bad throws. The Cougars had a three to nothing lead after one and a half innings, but the defense
just disapeared. Dennis Anderson made a couple of bad throws to second and one to home plate on a passed ball.
Scott Hicks had a ball go under his glove at first base to lead off the second, it rolled into right
for a hit. Hunter Wyant made a diving stop but bad throw, he had an error but then the scorer I guess
felt sorry for him so he took it off the board. Michael Tucker made a late throw to first in the fifth to
get charged with an error.
Jon Asahina came in after Fulchino and pitched very well. In the fourth inning after the Dragon
had all their fun, he came in and struck out Edwin Encarnacion to end the inning. In the next inning
he had one base runner, and that runner reached on an error. In the sixth he walked one, but then
he picked him off at first base, after he had dove in and was safe. then Hicks still had the ball
and William Bergolla took his hand off the bag, and was tagged out. In Jon's last inning, he struck
out two of the three Dragons he faced. In all he struck out five, and did not allow a single hit. After
what had happend in the first few innings, that was a great outing. Kevin Cave came in for the
save, and he pitched a perfecct inning, he closed the inning out with a strikeout.
For the Dragons, Daylan Childress started and went six innings. He gave up five hits and three
runs. All of those runs were earned. He walked three and struck out three. After he gave up a few
runs in the first two innings, he settled down. From the third till the fifth he allowed one hit, and
one walk.
The scoring started in the top of the first when, Charles Frazier led
things off with a single to left. Frazier then stole second. The Dragons pitched
out thinking that Frazier was going to steal and he still beat the throw since it was
high. Anthony Brewer struck out. Scott Hicks then singled up the middle to score Frazier.
The next inning for the Cougars the struck again. Michael Tucker led
the inning off with a walk. He then stole second base. On the play the second baseman
droped the ball. Dennis Anderson then popped up to short. The short stop and the left fielder
colided but didn't drop the ball. Heath Kelly flew out to right for the second out. Rex Rundgren then
walked. A passed ball, on a curve ball that went between the catchers legs moved the runners along a base.
Charles Frazier then doubled off the wall in the gap in left to score both Tucker and Rundgren for a three
to nothing lead.
The Cougars defense went away on them. Justin Davie reached on a play when the
ball went under Hicks' glove at first. Omar Hurtado was hit near the shoulder on a pitch. Bryan
Prince singled to right. On the play the relay from Frazier to Wyant at second. Wyant threw to home and
Dennis Anderson did a nice job at covering the plate, and they got Davis at home. Gary Patchett
walked, he would get to second on a passed ball. On the passed ball, Hurtado would scored. Anderson tried
to throw the ball home to Fulchino but he threw it to Rundgren near short. That throw allowed
Prince to score. The throw from Rundgren to home went over the head off every one, for
another error. This allowed Patchett to go all the way to third. Amoras Nina then grounded out to short. On the play Patchett would score.
With one out in the fourth Gary Patchett walked. He would steal second, on the play catcher
Dennis Anderson threw the ball into centerfield. Amoras Nina flied to left. William Bergolla then
hit a long homer to score Patchett. Gary Varner then singled to right. Jesse Gutierrez then doubled to
left. The Cougars took Fulchino out and brought in Jon Asahina. Jon struck out Edwin Encarnacion to end
the inning.
The Cougars would try to get a little closer in the seven when Rex Rundgren singled to right. Charles
Frazier then grounded into a fielder's choice, Rundgren would be out at second. Anthony Brewer then
doubled off the centerfield wall to bring home Frazier. The Dragons then changed pitchers. Scott Hicks took
the next pitch halfway off the wall in right. Brewer wasn't sure that the ball would be a hit, so he
only made it to third on the double by Hicks. George Arnott then nailed one to the track in center, it was
caught, and on the play Frazier would score to tie the game back up at five. Hunter Wyant then
doubled to the gap in right to score Hicks to put the Cougars ahead.

In an era of supposed global warming. Fifth Third Field was enveloped in a blanket of spring chill Thursday night for those of the 7,530 ticket holders who actually attended.
It wasn't all that went wrong for the Dayton Dragons, who lost 6-5 to Kane County despite hitting the game's only homer and scoring two runs on the same play as the Cougars overthrew home plate twice.
In one of the most bizarre games of the Class A Midwest League season, the Dragons surrendered three runs in the first two innings as Dayton starter Daylan Childress allowed three hits and two walks, with a passed ball thrown in.
The Dragons got it all back in the bottom of the second, and could have had more.
Justin Davis led the second with a single and Omar Hurtado was hit by a pitch. Then Bryan Prince slammed a pitch that right fielder Charlie Frazier made like he had a chance to catch. Davis held near second waiting to see the ball fell for what would become a double, he went to third.
Hurtado, through, saw the ball better than Davis, who now had the play behind him.
"I didn't get a good look at it," Davis said, "And with no out, I held I didn't think I saw it as good, as I could but basically, I did the right thing."
Hurtado, though didn't stop at second and when Davis and Dragons manager Donnie Scott, coaching third, saw Hurtado coming, Davis had to go home. He was thrown out on a close play that could have gone either way.
"It cost us a run, basically," Davis said, "I was telling him (the umpire) I was safe, but he didn't listen to me."
It didn't ruin the inning as a wild pitch scored Hurtado and Prince scored as catcher Dennis Anderson threw past pitcher Jeff Fulchino covering home, then shortstop Rex Rundgren fired wide to Anderson covering trying to get Prince.
Patchett scored on an Amaurys Nina ground out.
Dayton might have won on a two run William Bergolla homer in the fourth that banked off the far left corner of the left field concession stand and shed, but three doubles and a single in Kane County's seventh resulted in three runs and decided the game.
