Kane County at Dayton

May 3rd, 2004

Tonight the Cougars had that one big inning that they needed then scored a run the next inning but really didnt do much besides that. A great job of pitching was done by Brigmer Leon. He would come into the game in the second inning, and would pitch four shutout innings giving up only on ehit. He walked one and struck out four. This is after the Dragons had just scored four runs off of starter Jared Trout.

Trout started for the Cougars and was roughed up from the begining. In the first with one out he would walk Luis Bolivar, a wild pitch would get him to second. Joey Votto then walked. A double steal would mean runners on second and third with one out. Ryan Fry struck out. Walter Olmstead then popped out to center so that Trout could wiggle out of the inning without any harm being done to the scoreboard.

He wasn't so lucky in the second inning when the Dragons would bat around and score four runs. Kyle Smith doubled to center to lead things off. Habelito Hernandez doubled down the right field line to drive home Smith. Evan Conley singled to cetner to bring home Hernandez. Miguel Perez would reach on a fielder's choice with Conley being out at second. Will Hudson singled through the vacant hole in the left side as Perez was going on the pitch and would make third. Bolivar singled to left to score Perez. Joey Votto got the runners over as he grounded out to second for the second out. Fry would walk to load the bases. Olmstead grounded one into the hole, shortstop Kory Wayment got to the ball and tried to get the force on Fry at second but the throw was late, on the play Hudson would score. After that Cougar manager Dave Joppie had seen enough and brought out the hook for Trout. In came Leon. He got Smith to ground into a fielder's choice with Vasili Spanos getting the ball and stepping on third to end the inning.

The Cougars on the other hand in the first inning with two outs had David Castillo and Eddie Kim walk. Spanos then grounded out to end the inning. In the third inning with one out Brian Ingram would double just inside the third base bag. Nick Rogers then was caught looking for the second out. Castillo grounded out to shrot to end the threat.

That all led to the fifth inning for the Cougars when they would put a nine spot on the scoreboard. David Harriman would lead off and hit the third pitch he saw into left field for his second homer of the season. This is all off of the Dragons reliever Jon George, as they pulled their starter Calvin Medlock after four good innings. Wayment would then single to third. Luis Perez singled to right. Wayment went from first to third on the play. George would be over covering third, and twist his ankle and would have to come out of the game. Bradley George then came on to pitch. Ingram walked to load the bases. Rogers singeld to left to allow Wayment to score. Castillo would reach on an error by third baseman Olmstead. On the play Perez would score. Eddie Kim hit a fly to center for the first out. Joppie held the runner at third Ingram. Vasili Spanos then came up and launched the Cougars third grand slam of the season over the left center field wall. Dustin Majewski singled to center. Harriman came up angain and flew to center. The centerfielder Hudson didnt se the ball and it dropped. Harriman tried for second and would be thrown out. Wayment was then hit by a pitch in the arm. Perez doubled downt he left field line to score Majewski and Wayment to make it nine runs. Terry Rice then came on to pitch for the Dragons. He would walk Ingram. Rogers would strike out to end the inning.

The very next inning the Cougars came back and scored another run. Castillo lead off with a walk, and would get to second on a wild pitch. Kim would be caught staring. Spanos singled to center to drive home Castillo for his fifth run batted in for the game.

The Cougars had more chances to score but couldn't get any runners past second in the seventh and the ninth. Dayton would score one more time in the fifth but would have chances in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

In the fifth with one out Olmstead would reach on a error by second baseman Ingram, the ball went into the bullpen on his throw. Olmstead would end up on third. Kyle Smith struck out against Leon for the second out. Hernandez then popped out to short to end the inning. Leon also got into soem trouble in the sixth. Conley would walk to lead things off. Perez struck out. Hudson would fly to left. Bolivar then singeld to left to get Conley to third. The Cougars made a pitching change brining in Drew Friedberg. Freideberg walked Votto to load the base. Ryan Fry would then strike out on three pitches to end the inning.

Dayton scored their final runs in the seventh off of Freidberg. Olmstead would lead off with a double to center. Smith grounded out to short. Hernandez then flew to left. Perez would single to left to bring home Olmstead. Hudson singled to center then to bring in Conely. The Cougars then made a pitching change to bring in J.R. Pickens who got Bolivar to fly to center to end the inning.

Pickens did a real nice job as he pitched two and one thirds inning of one hit ball. He would strike out three. David Castillo continued his great hitting. He walked three times and would be on base four times in the game, and score twice. Spanos had three hits and five runs batted in. Harriman also had three hits and one run batted in. Perez had three hits and two runs batted, he also scored a run.
