Kane County at Dayton

May 5th, 2004

Just like the last time the Cougars scored a bunch of runs in two straight games, they took a day off from scoring runs today as they lost the game three to nothing. They only were able to manage three hits on the day. Their two errors did not help the cause to much either. The Cougars are still four games over the five hundred mark at 15-11 and are only in second place, one game back of Cedar Rapids.

Brad Knox had his first bad outing of the year. He lasted into the fifth inning but was getting into too much trouble to stay along very long. He gave up five hits and three runs. Knox did strikeout five. The were a couple of bright spots for him in the game though. In the first inning, Luis Bolivar was hit by a pitch. Then for somereason the umpire, Jesse Redwine i belive was his name issued a warning to both benches. Why I dont know there wasnt a history between the two teams or anything. Cougar manager Dave Joppie came out and was animated in his discussion with the ump. Habelito Hernandez then singled to left, to get Bolivar to second. The pick off throw to second finally worked as Bolivar was out on the throw to second baseman Luke Appert. Joey Votto and Jarrod Schmidt then both struck out which would end the inning.

In the fourth inning Knox did a nice job of getting out of a bases loaded mess. With two outs, Biran Conley would ground one to short, the throw from shortstop Brian Ingram was low and first baseman Eddie Kim bobbled the ball and would be charged with an error. Miguel Perez walked, which went runners on first and second with the two outs. Bolivar was hit by another pitch which would load the bases. Hernandez then popped out to short to let Knox wiggle out of the jam.

Elvin Beltre hit a solo homer in the second inning with two outs that was hammerd to right, to give the Dragons a one nothing lead. In the third inning Dayton scored two runs, Miguel Perez walked to lead things off. One out later Hernandez doubled to left, to get Perez to third. Joey Votto singled up the middle to score both Perez and Hernandez.

Daytons pitching was good all game, Luis Noriega started for the Dragons and retired all but two of the Cougars he faced in his six innings of work. One of those runners was erased a batter later with a double play. Noriego didnt walk anyopne and struck out threee. Josh Thigpen then came on and pitched three solid innings, giving up one hit. His only problem was two walks. Thigpem induced two double plays to get out of two seperate innings.
