Quad City Times
by Steve Batterson
The biggest offensive explosion of the season not only allowed the Bandits to finish off a double header sweep with a 14-1 clubbing of Fort Wayne, it also moved the team above .500 for the first time since April 15.
Quad City is 15-14 this year, the first time it had a winning record since it was 4-3.
"We needed a night like this," manager Kevin Boles said. "We've had a tough time in our latest doubleheaders. We were aggressive on the basepaths and we had a good approach at the plate. It's good to get over that hump."
About the only thing Boles didn't like was his team commited three errors in it's 3-0 win in the opener.
"We need to catch the ball better. As happy as we are with the two wins, we have to clean that up." he said.
Pitcher Errol Simonitsch labeled the twin wins as "huge"." "We need to string together two, three wins in a row more often. A night like this one only helps us gain some confidence. It's a good step forward." he said.
The Bandits puntuated their move above .500 by recording season highs in runs and hits against Fort Wayne (13-16).
"We were aggressive to the fastball and hit some good pitches," Boles said.
Before finishing off their 14 runs, 14 hit effort agains the Wizards, the team's biggest output of the season came April 18th, when the Bandits scored 13 runs in a one run loss at Burlington
Quad City had recorded 13 hits on two occasions, most recently April 27 at Cedar Rapids
Denard Span and Scott Whitrock led the Quad City at the plate in the nightcap. Span went 4 for 5 with 3 RBI's, while Whitrock was 3 for 3 before exiting after four innings.
A New High
Simonitsch's 11 strikeouts in the opener were a career high for hte second year pro.
The biggest Inning
The Bandits seven run third inning in the nightcap was the team's biggest this season. Before Saturday, the most runs the Bandits had scored in an inning was five, something that occured three times this seaon.
Double Duty
The doubleheader was the fourth of the season for the Bandits and the second straight Saturday night twin bill at John O'Donnell Stadium.
Quad City has swept one doubleheader and been swept twice.
Resto's big day
Former Quad City outfielder Michael Restovich hit for the cycle in Rochester's 15-3 win over Durham on Saturday.
Restovich is on a five game hitting streak going 13-29 during that time, including six doubles, one triple and three home runs. He has driven in 11 runs.
