Brian McFall's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the Burlington Bees past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 4-3. Monday night in a Midwest League baseball game played before a paid crowd of 1,354 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Kernels (18-13) blew a three run lead and wasted an outstanding start by Abel Moreno, who hurled six shutout innings of two hit ball and struck out seven. The loss kept the Kernels in a tie with Clinton and Kane County in the Western Divison.
Burlington (12-19) scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning, and then added a single run in the ninth and 10th innings to forge a split of the four game series. Both of the latter runs scored without benefit of a hit.
A pair of one out walks, a passed ball and McFall's sacrifice fly produced the game winner in the Burlington 10th.
The Bees tied the score in the ninth, 3-3 without the benefit of a hit. Walter Sevilla drew a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third when Jesse Smith pitch to intentionally walk McFall sailed over the head of Wilson, the Kernels catcher. Jeff Barry's fielder's choice grounder scored Sevilla.
The Kernels got the tying run to third base with two outs in the 10th inning, but Brandon Wood struck out to end the inning.
The Kernels were retired in order in the bottom of the 10th inning by Burlington right hander Dusty Dossett (2-0).
Burlington opens a 12 game, 13 day homestand tonight with a 7pm game against Lansing. After a four game series against the Lugnuts, the Bees entertain Beloit and Dayton.
