Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
May 26th, 2004
Can bats disappear with out being stolen, or perhaps a witch cast a spell on them. That's a question some of the Cougars fans were asking today as the Cougars bats were seldom seen , at least until the ninth inning. They only scored one run, and that run only kept them fron being shutout, it didnt mean anything else to the game. Kane County didnt get a man past second untill the ninth, they only got two men to second before the ninth.
The offense took the night off, or just wasn't there, of those seven hits four of them were in the ninth inning. Is this team going back to doing everything in the eighth and ninth innings and seeing if they can just win games that way? Or are they trying to give their fans a heart attck, with how they play.
Beloit's starter Dana Eveland pitched one helluva game. He went six innings and shut the Cougars offense down on only three hits, The Cougars were behind in the count on all but four times against him after the first pitch. He walked one and struck out six.
All that said, I will say this our starting pitching is what is saving us on some of these nights. Givin that Cougar starter Brad Knox did give up ten hits and four runs. He wasnt the same Knox that we have seen in previous starts, in the first inning his mechanics were wrong. His stride looked almost long, and he seemed a little off balance through his motion. A talk with Cougar pitching coach Fernando Arroyo seemed to help a little but it was a little too late for this game.
The Snappers scored their first run in the first inning. Guilder Rodriguez led off with a single to left. Terry Trofholz then walked. Drew Anderson would ground to first, both runners moved along a base. A wild pitch on the second pitch to Lou Palmasiano would allow Rodriguez to score. Palmasiano and Vinny Rottino would ground out to the left side to end the inning.
Beloit had their chances in this game to really pin one on the Cougars. In the second inning Adam Heether led off with a single to center. Steve Moss followed that with another single to center. Manuel Ramirez moved the runners along with a bunt. Knox would settle done and get Josh Murray to strike out with two runners in scoring position. He would then get Rodriguez to strike out on three pitches to wiggle out of the jam.
A double play would get the Cougars out of a led off single by Trofholz in the third. In the seventh the Snappers scored three runs, Moss led things off with a single to left. Ramirez laid down a bunt to move him to second. Murray singled to left. Rodriguez put down a bunt towards first, he would beat the play after firstbaseman Vasili Spanos couldn't make up his mind on where to go with the ball. On the play Moss would score. Trofholz then singled to right. Murray would score on the play. the right fielder Nick Rogers's throw went into the Snappers dugout, where he was throwing I dont know since it was between home and third base, and there was no cutoff. Rodriguea would score ont he throw and Trofholz went to third. The Cougars then took out Brad Knox and brought in Justin Crowder. Crowder would walk Anderson on five pitches. Cougar manager Dave Joppie then brought out the hook, and got Crowder out of there, and brought in Brigmer Leon. Leon would get Palmasinao to ground into an inning ending double play.
One of the Cougars lone bright spots was the ninth inning when I guess Ozzie found the bats. Luis Perez led it off with a single to center. One out later Spanos singled to left. Brian Snyder then singled to right to load the bases, Joppie held Perez at third. Dustin Majewski was then caught looking for the second out. Eddie Kim then came in and pitch hit for David Harriman, he would single to center to score Castillo. With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Luke Appert came to the plate. Appert would do what his double play partner did and be caught looking to end the game.
The bullpen combo of Brigmer Leon and Mike McGirr did a nice job. Leon went one and two third innings, he did walk two in the eighth. A double play got him out of that jam. McGirr struck out two in the ninth inning.
