The Cougars did a nice job of getting back together after the disaster
that was the series with the Peoria Chiefs. They had lost 4 out of 5 in
the series. Today thanks in part to Rex Rundgren's single that drove home
two runs in the second, and the combined effort of all three pitchers. The Cougars
finally won another game.
Jeff Fulchino who came off of the disabled list today after spending three
weeks on it, he pitched and pitched effectivly. Jeff went the first three
innings, he only went three because of course he was on a pitch count.
He gave up four hits and struck out one.
Fulchino did get into some trouble though. In the second inning Joe Hastings
led things off with a single to right. Nick Trzesniak then singled to
left. Jon DiBetta reached on a fielder's choice, on the play Trzesniak was
out at second. Josh Carter then hit into a fielder's choice with Hastings being
caught off of third base. Eddie Serano then grounded out to second to end
the inning.
More trouble for Fulchino in the next half inning, as Pedro De Los Santos
led things off with a single to center, then stole second. Josh Barfield
grounded out to second, on the play Santos moved to third. Jon Benick
was then hit by a pitch. Greg Sain then hit into a round the horn double
play to end the inning.
Scott Simeon made his first professional start for the Wizards today, he
lasted four innings, Giving up four hits and two runs. Simeon walked three
and struck out two.
The Cougars got a piece of Simeon in the second inning when they
scored their two runs off of him then. George Arnott walked to led things
off. Dennis Anderson grounded out to second. Arnott moved to second on the
play. Michael Tucker lined out to center. Hunter Wyant then hit a dribbler
to the thirdbaseman. He had no play on anyone. On the play Arnott moved
to third. Wyant then stole second. Rex Rundgren singled to right to score
both Arnott and Wyant.
That was basically all that the Cougars pitchers would need, In the fourth
inning John Skinner came in for relief and pitched lights out. He went the next
five innings and gave up three hits, plus he struck out six. This is the
second time in four games that Skinner has been called on for long relief
and pitched shutout ball.
The Cougars would score once more in the sixth. With one out, Dennis
Anderson hit a grounder to short, the short stop made a nice play to make
the play close, but I think Anderson should've been safe, oh well. Michael
Tucker then lined to center. The only problem was that the catcher was
called for interferance so Tucker got first base. Hunter Wyant then singled
to center to get Tucker to third. Wyant stole second, the second baseman
dropped the ball, and Wyant was able to make it to third, while Tucker would score.
In the ninth Cougars closer Kevin Cave would make things interesting. He struck out
the first two hitters. Then he walked the next two on eight pitches. Then
Cave struck out the last one to register the save.
