The Cougars did not have anything today after they won in the tenth yesterday. They
got pounded 12-2 at the Elf. The Cougars record at home is now 13-12.
Fort Wayne just had way to much offense for the Cougars today, it would also have
helped to get the ball over the plate, but let's not get picky. The Wizards had 16 hits, and
12 runs.
One inning really killed the Cougars, the eighth inning in which the Wizards score eight
runs. Without that inning it would have been a 4-2 victory which is a lot better to swallow than
12-2.
For the Wizards several of thier hitters feasted off of Cougar pitchers. Jon Benick had
four hits including a homer and a double. He drove in three. Nick Trzesniak also had four hits. He hit
a homer and drove in two. Jackson Aquino had three hits, and scored a run. Jon Hastings had two
doubles, but both of them drove home some runs. Altogether he drove in four.
Nic Ungs made his first start for the Cougars since being brought back from Jupiter. He
lasted seven innings. Nic gave up seven hits but only three runs. Ungs walked one.
Ungs had only one really bad inning, the sixth. The trouble started with two outs, Greg Sain
singled to center. Jon Benick then hit a homer off of the top of the wall in center. Nick Trzesniak
followed with a solo shot to the scoreboard in left center.
Corey Stewart pitched very well for the Wizards. He went seven innings, giving up only three
hits and one run. He walked one and struck out seven. After he gave up his only run he retired
the next eight. The first two after the homer that he retired, were on strikes.
The only run the Cougars would get off of Stewart came in the fourth. With one out Jason Stokes
hit his tenth homer of the season to lead the Cougars. The ball went onto the deck in left. The amazing
part was that the Torco sign on top of the scoreboard in center, actually lit up. First time i've
noticed that in two years.
The big story of the game was the collapse of the Cougars bullpen. After Ungs left the game, after
seven inning of work, Dave Johnston came on. He got two Wizards out. Elvis DeJesus then had too
come on to get the last out. Finally the game was turned over to second baseman/pitcher Kris Clute for
the final inning. Clute I heard registered at 75 m.p.h. on the gun.
Johnston got into trouble right off the bat in his outing. He hit Lee McCool. Joe Hastings then
doubled to center to score McCool. Greg Sain grounded out to second to get Hastings to third. Jon
Benick doubled to center to score Hastings. Nick Trzesniak singled to center to score Benick. Kevin
Reinking lined one to left. Leftfielder George Arnott made a great diving catch near the foul line. Keto
Anderson walked. Jackson Aquino reached on an infield singl to load the bases. Pedro De Los Santos singled
to center to score Trzesniak and Anderson. The Cougars then brought in DeJesus to pitch to McCool, the
Wizards had gone throught the order once in the inning. McCool walked to load the bases. Joe Hastings
lined a double down the right field line to score Aquino, Santos and McCool.
The Cougars would not hold their heads down though, they tried to scrap for some runs. In the
next half inning they would score one. The Wizards brought in Jack Cassell in relief of Stewart. William
Arroyo reached on an error by shortstop Aquino. On the play Aquino overthrew first. Arroyo would
make it to second. Rex Rundgren then grounded out to third. On the play Arroyo would make it to
third. Anthony Brewer singled to center to score Arroyo.
Fort Wayne would continue their onslaught in the top of the ninth by scoring one more run. The
Cougars had brought in Kris Clute to save the pen. Jon Benick singled to center. On the play
Brewer made a dive for the ball and it went in and out of his glove. Nick Trzesniak then singled
to left. Kevin Reinking popped up to second. On the play second baseman missed the pop up, thankfully
the base up had called the infield fly rule to save the Cougars from themselves. Keto Anderson then
singled to right to load the bases. Jackson Aquino singled to right to score Benick. Pedro De Los Santos
then popped up to short, yes Rundgren caught the ball, and the ump did call the infield fly rule again.
Lee McCool would then strikeout to end the inning.
