Everything was set up for a big Dayton Dragons finish Thursday night at Fifth Third Field and the Dragons could certainly use a big finish.
If it comes it will have to come tonight, because with one out, the bases loaded and trailing by a run, the Dragons couldn't get the finish they wanted for the third straight night and lost again to the Wisconsin TimberRattlers, 4-3 in a Class A Midwest League game played in from of 8,353 fans.
Noochie Varner, the Dragons leading hitter, has a ball and two strikes when the Wisconsin infield moved back to regular depth after pulling in before the second strike in case there was a play at the plate.
With the infield back, Varner smacked a hard grounder to short stop Guillermo Martinez, who began the game ending double play, just nipping Varner at first.
Had the infield stayed in, the ball probably would have skipped through for at least one run.
"That was a good one," said Dayton manager Donnie Scott, meaning the excitement of loading the bases was not the agony of losing again. "He (Varner) hit it hard, Noochie battling. It came down to one at bat,"
Scott should have know what was about to happen. For the third straight night, the Dragons took an early lead and starter Brad Salmon, was pitching well while the Dragons scored one in the first and another in the second.
Salmon gave up a run i nthe third, the tying run in the sixth and Wisconsin's first go ahead run in the seventh when Martinez was hit by a pitch and Miguel Villilo doubled him home. He made no excuses.
"They got the hits when they need them," Salmon said.
The Dragons tried to follow the same formula in the eighth inning when Wisconsin manager Gary Thurman used four pitchers and the Dragons tied the game.
Edwin Encarnacion led off with a single and scored when Varner was safe on a bunt that third baseman Greg Dobbs threw away. Randy Ruiz was intentionally walked and became the last runner of the evening.
"Their starters are making adjustments on out hitters, "Scott said, "The second time around, they're going through us like butter,"
