South Bend SilverHawks at Kane County Cougars

Rain, Rain, please go away? the game on the 30th was suspended in the third inning, and was resumed on the 31st. Well on the 31 st in the double header we had two rain delays and about five other times when it started to rain. At least we won the first game.
To start off the game then Cougars had Steve Bondurant start for them and he was good through the two and a third innings that he pitched. He gave up two hits and struck out three. Steve got the first five men in a row beofre he gave up a double to Miguel Montero.
Now for the bad part, the Cougars were not ready to come and play a noon double header ont he 31st. At least not at the beginin of the game. Brad Knox started the resumed game in the third inning with one out. He would give up three straight hits and two of the three runs in the inning would go to him.
With one out Mike Goss singled to center against Bondurant. Then the rains came. When play resumed the next day Jon Kaplan singled to left. Emilo Bonafacio singled to center to drive in Goss, and get Kaplan to third. Bonafacio would steal second. Augie Murilo then singled to left to score both Kaplan and Bonafacio. Edgar Varela then grounded one to first. Eddie Kim went ot second to try to start the double play. The throw back to first would be hit and Varela would be safe. Knox struck out Alex Frazier to end the inning.
The Cougars bats started to show some life in them in the fourth and really heated up in the fifth inning on. In the fourth Luke Apper hit a wind blown homer to right field. If the wind wasn't so strong that would've been a pop up behind first base. One pitch later David Castillo would hit a homer foul to left.
Kane County took the lead in the fifth with three runs of their own. Dustin Majewski lead off the inning with a single to center. Vasili Spanos would single back to the mound. One out later Jesse Acosta walked. One more out later, Luke Appert would be hit by a pitch to force in Majewski from third. Castillo popped one up towards the mound. The pitcher, Ryan Coffin called every one off and promtly dropped the ball. On the play Spanos and Acosta would score. Kim would reach on a fielder's choice with Castillo being out at second to end the inning.
Edgar Varela lead off the sixth for the Hawks with a double to center. Majewski dove for the ball and missed. The rains then came and the game had to be stopped. J.R. Pickens then came in and replaced Brad Knox. Knox would strike out Frazier for the first out. Miguel Montero singled to center to score Varela to tie the game. Lino Garcia bunted him over to second. Alberto Gonzalez would pop up foul to first to end the inning.
That would be the end of the scoring for the Hawks as the Cougars would score four more times in the final two innings to pull away. Before that they would actually take the lead in the sixth inning. Brian Snyder lead off with a double to right. Majewski grounded out ot first, on the play Snyder moved to third. Spanos was then intentionally walked. Chris Tritle hit a flyt o center, Majewski tagged up and would score on the sacrifice fly.
In the seventh inning the Cougars would score with one out. Appert singled to left. Castillo then followed with adouble to left to get Appert to third. Castillo would've been out at second, trying to get there on the throw but the second baseman dropped the ball. Eddie Kim doubled to left to score both Appert and Castillo. Snyder would get Kim to third with a ground out to first. Majewski walked to put runners on first and third with two outs. Spanos would reach on a fielder's choice with Majewski out at second.
With one out in the eighth the Cougars struck again. Acosta walked. Nick Rogers singled to center. Appert would single to right to score Acosta. The Hawks then made a pitching change. Castillo would reach on a fielder's choice, with Appert being out at second. On the play Rogers would score.
J.R. Pickens did a great job of pitching.He gave up a hit to the second man he faced but then got out of the inning. In the seventh he gave up a leadoff single then erased him on a double play. J.R. retried the final eight men he faced in route to the win.
Notes-Jesse Acosta came up to the Cougars from extended spring training, when they put Mike McGirr on the disabled list.
