It was a night of missed opportunities for the Burlington Bees.
Burlington left 13 runners on base, seven in the first three innings in a 6-3 Class A Midwest League loss to the West Michigan WhiteCaps at Community Field.
Juan Tejeda's three run home run in the eigth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and helped snap the Bees' four game winning streak.
But the tone for the game was set much earlier, when the Bees loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, and didn't score.
The Bees got a one out walk by Odannys Ayala and two out singles by Jonathan Guzman and Anibal Figuereo in the first inning. But designated hitter Matt Cleveland struck out swinging.
John Draper and Alex Rodriguez had one out singles in the second inning, then Ayala loaded the bases with a two out single. Ruben Gotay, though was called out on strikes, one of three strikeouts he had in the game.
Those innings put pressure on Bees starter Kahi Kaanoi, and the WhiteCaps got to him for three runs in the third inning.
Juan Francia reached on a one out single and scored on Gilberto Mejia's two run home run. David Mattle followed with a single, went to third on Tejeda's double and scored on Don Kelly's ground out.
Kaanoi, who walked two hitters and hit a batte rint he first two innings, settled down after the third. He retired 14 of the final 15 hitters he faced and left the game with the score tied at 3-3.
Burlington scored it's first run in the third inning when Guzman scored on a passed ball. Ayala's ground out scored Brett Groves in the fourth inning, and the Bees tied the game in the sixth when Groves doubled home Draper.
But Bees reliever Hector Rosado (2-2) couldn't keep the WhiteCaps in check. Rosado started the eigth inning with a walk. Mattle then bunted down the first base line. Rosado picked up the ball, but his throw was wild as he fell to the grass. Tejeda then followed with his sixth home run of the season.
The Bees last scoring threat was in the seventh. Guzman reached on an error and Cleveland walked with one out, but WhiteCaps reliever Trevor Leu entered the game and struck out Ben Cordova before getting Draper to pop out to end the inning.
Leu (1-0) retired all eight hitters he faced, striking out six, including all three hitters in the ninth inning.
Some of the faces have changed, but West Michigan still dominates the recent sereis against the Bes. The WhiteCaps won 7 of 8 games against the Bees last season. Saturday's game was the opening game of the season series between the two clubs..... Gotay was ejected by plate umpire Art Stewart in the ninth for arguing a called third strike call.
