The Cedar Rapids Kernels need a new winning streak. Their old one is done.
The Kernels' eight game winning streak was snapped by the West Michigan WhiteCaps 8-3, Wednesday night in a Midwest League game before 3,469 fans at Old Kent Park.
The WhiteCaps scored seven runs on seven hits against Kernels starter Joe Torres (5-2) in the bottom of the first inning. Cedar Rapids, playing it's first road game after a spotless eight game homestand, committed two errors in the inning and spent the rest of the night futilely trying to catch up.
West Michigan catcher Mike Rabelo belted a two run homer in the first.
Torres did not return to the mound for the second inning. The Kernels got effective relief pitching from Mark O'Sullivan, Jamie Steward and Dustin Griffith, but the damage had already been done.
West Michigan second baseman Juan Francia collected four hits and scored two runs. Mike Eylward, playing first base for Cedar Rapids, had two of the Kernels' six hits.
Jason Moates (5-1) got the victory for the WhiteCaps. He went six innings, allowing three hits.
