West Michigan White Caps at Kane County Cougars
June 6th, 2004
Chris Dunwell pitched ok in his six innings of work. The Cougars just didn't start hitting untill he was out of the game. He gave up five hits and three runs, plus he walked one and struck out seven.
The Cougars would get ahead for good in the seventh inning on a big fly by Spanos. David Harriman led off with a single to center, then stole second base. One out later, Brian Ingram then grounded one to first, the first baseman wanted to flip the ball to the pitcher covering. There was only one problem the pitcher forgot to cover the base. On the play Harriman went to third. A wild pitch would move Ingram over to second. One out later, the Caps made a pitching change to bring in Anthony Tomey to replace their starter Brian Rogers. Tomey walked David Castillo on five pitches to load the bases. Vasili Spanos then walked up and hit a grand slam to left center.
Before that inning the Cougars would be down a run. West Michigan scored the first two runs of the game in the fourth inning. With two outs Danillo Sanchez singled to right. Garth McKinney took the third pitch he saw over the scoreboard. The Caps followed the next inning with another run, with one out. Nick McIntyre singled to left, then stole second base. One out later Eric Rodland tripled to center to score McIntyre.
The Cougars offense would start to crank in the fifth inning when they scored two runs. With one out David Harriman hit a grounder to short, that the shortstop droped the ball. That was called a single, Rogers had a no hitter going untill then, the ball should've been ruled an error. One out later Brian Ingram took a pitch over the right center field wall.
Kane County added another run in the eighth inning. Dustin Majewski led it off with a single to first, he then stole second base. A ground out to short by Luis Perez would move him to second. With the infield in, David Harriman got a broken bat bloop over the second baseman for a single to drive in Majewski.
Dan Fyvie pitched well in relief to get the win. He came in and shut the door on the Caps. In the eighth inning with one out, Rodland would reach on an error by Fyvie. One out later, Fyvie hit Kelly Hunt. That would promt Cougar manager Dave Joppie to remove Fyvie and bring in their closer Jairo Garcia. Garcia would strike out Sanchez to end the inning.
