Kane County Cougars at Lansing Lugnuts

June 15th, 2004

Going up against a Major League who's on a rehab assignment is never easy. After that big leaguer comes out of the game you hope that your team can light up there opposing teams bullpen since the starter isnt going to go to far into the game. At least thats the way its supposed to happend sometimes.

The Cougars faced off against Ryan Dempster who is on a rehab assignment from the Cubs after having "Tommy John" surgery last year. He not only is a big leaguer but you think he could've given us a break since he played four games for us back in the last months of the 96 season. Oh well, he pitched into the fifth inning, giving up five hits and three runs. Two of those runs were earned. Dempster struck out six and walked one while throwing 77 pitches.

Kane County did get to him in the third and the fourth innings after he had retired the first six in a row. With one out in the third inning Trevor Brown singled to right. Chris Tritle followed that up with a single to right to allow Brown to score. One out later, Luke Appert singled to right to score Tritle. David Castillo would then strik eout to end the inning.

An error in the fourth led to an unearned run against Dempster. Vasili Spanos led off with a double to right. Brian Snyder grounded out to third, on the play Spanos moved to third. Dustin Majewski then grounded one to first, Dempster took a second to relieze he had to cover first and Majewski beat he there. On the play Spanos would score. A ground out to short would move Majewski to second. Trevor Brown then grounded one to short, the second baseman and the shortstop collide and drop the ball. Majewski really hustled and would be able to score on the error.

In the fifth inning the Cougars would have Brian Ingram led off with a walk against Dempster, one out later Dempster would be pulled. Randy Wells then came in and struck out Castillo looking. Walked Spanos, then got Brian Snyder to ground out to first to end the inning.

Manny Rodriguez started for the Cougars in a spot start because of the double header last Friday, he didn't fair as well. Manny would last just into the third inning, giving up seven hits and five runs. He would get into trouble in the second because of his own error. Kevin Collins would lead off with a single to right. Carlos Mejia then singled to center. Rodriguez tried to pick off Mejia and the throw got away. Collins would score on the play. Two outs later, with a runner on third, Drew Larsen singled to left to allow Alberto Garcia to score. Garcia pitch ran for Mejia who got hurt on the pick off play.

The third inning would basically decide the game int he Lugnuts favor. Robinson Chirinos led off with a walk. Carlos Rojas then singled to right. Brian Dopirak then doubled to left to score both Chirinos and Rojas. Kevin Collins was then intentionally walked. Garcia then singled to left to load the bases. Rodriguez was then pulled from the game, in favor of Mike McGirr. McGirr got Jake Fox to pop to first for the first out. Alan Rick then struck out for the second out. Unfortunatly McGirr would walk Larsen on six pitches to force in Dopirak. Tony McQuade then struck out looking to end the inning.

That would be the end of the scoring as both bullpens did a nice job picking up their respective starters. Mike McGirr, Brigmer Leon, Daniel Fyvie and Jairo Garcia combined to pitch six innings of shutout ball. Only problem was that the Lansing pen of Randy Wells, Clay Rapata, Jaun Mateo and Adalberto Mendez combined to throw 4.2 innings of shutout ball after Dempster left.

The Cougars did have two more chance to score some runs. In the sixth inning with one out, Kory Wayment doubled to left, he would get to third on an error by the left fielder. Luis Perez then pitch hit for Brown and got caught looking for the second out. Tritle then also got caught starring to end the inning. The Cougars last chance would be in the eighth inning. Spanos led off with a double to right. Brian Snyder then continued his recent slump by striking out. Majewski followed by getting called out on strikes. The Lugnuts then brought in Mateo to replace Rapada. He would get Wayment to pop out to second on the first pitch to end the inning.
