Kane County Cougars at Lansing Lugnuts

June 16th, 2004

The Cougars beat themselves tonight as they made two or three base running mistakes, and a couple of wild pitches didn't help either. Steve Bondurant didn't have his good stuff but he did a great job of keeping us in the game. When he left the game the Cougars were only down two runs.

Bondurant pitched into the sixth inning. He gave up a season high ten hits and six runs. Five of those runs were earned, he also walked one and struck out seven.

The Cougars started out the scoring in the second inning with one out. Vasili Spanos led it off with a double down the line in right. He tried for third and probly shouldn't have tried but he was called out. Cougar manager Dave Joppie argued that he was safe but oh well. One out later Dustin Majewski walked. Luis Perez then doubled to left to score Majewski who just made it under the tag of the catcher. Perez then stole second. David Harriman would then fly to right to end the inning.

The Nuts would follow in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs. Kevin Collins slammed the first pitch he saw over the right field fense, for his league leading 19th homer. Alan Rick then doubled to center. Carlos Mejia grounded out to short for the first out. Jake Fox then grounded out to third for the second out. Bondurant almost got out of the inning with the game still tied. Drew Larsen then singeld to left to score Rick. Tony McQuade hit a grounder that bounced over the head of third baseman Brian Snyder. Robinson Chirinos flew to left to end the inning.

In the third inning the Cougars would've had a good chance of tying the game, but a base running mistake took them out of the inning. Nick Rogers led off with a double to center. Brian Ingram then flew to left. Rogers tried to tag up and get to third. He would've been safe at third only one problem. He left second early, and the Lugnuts appealed before the next pitch and he was called out.

Things would only get worse with mental and phsyical mistakes. In the fourth inning the Lugnuts scored again. Mejia then singled to center. Jake Fox would then line one over the head of the left fielder Perez. Perez would bobble then ball, Mejia probly should've scored on the play but didn't. With runners on second and third and no outs, Bondurant struck out Larsen. McQuade followed with a fly to center. On the play Mejia tagged up and scored. Chirinos then struck out looking to finally end the inning.

With two outs in the fifth David Harriman doubled to right. Nick Rogers followed with a double down the right field line. It fell into th etrianlge where neither the secodn baseman, first baseman or right field could get over to catch it. Harriman would score on the play.

Brian Dopirak doubled off the top of the left field wall with one out in the fifth. One out later Alan Rick singled to right to score Dopirak. The sixth inning would be the Cougars undoing. With one out Larsen singled to center. He would steal second, on a wide throw from catcher David Castillo. Larsent hen took third after Castillo couldn't get a handle on the ball. McQuade would walk. After that the Cougars brought in J.R. Pickens to replace Steve Bondurant. Pickens would pitch well for two innings, just not in the sixth inning. Chirinos greated him with a doubled into the right field corner, which allowed Larsen to score, and McQuade went to third. The Cougars then brought the infield in to cut the run at the plate. Rojas grounded one to third, Snyder threw high to Castillo and he couldn't handle it. McQuade would score. Chirinos went to third on the play. Pickens then threw a wild pitch. Chirinos tried to score but Castillo hustled back and threw to Pickens covering the plate to get the out, on the wild pitch Rojas went to third. Unfortunatly the very next pitch was also wild, and allowed Rojas to score. Dopirak struck out to end the inning.

Pickens would settle down and strike out five of the next seven batters he faced to end the game. In the seventh inning, Snyder led off with a double. Majewski then flew to left. Perez lined to center. Harriman then grounded to short to waste the double.
