Burlington Bees at Kane County Cougars
June 18th, 2004
Can someone please tell the Cougars that leaving things till the very end of the game or even extra innings is driving their fans nuts. Thats what the Cougars did today as they played 13 innings. Luke Appert thankfully hit the first pitch thrown in the 13th over the right field fense to end the game.
It seemed like neither team really wanted to win this game, as both teams really collapsed in the clutch. In extra innings the Bees left seven men on base, the Cougars left three. The bullpens both did a nice job of work.
Kane County let the Bees score first, as they scored in each of the first four innings. Chris Dunwell started and really did not look sharp. In the first inning, Chris Lubanski led off the game by reaching on an error by the first baseman Vasili Spanos. On the play the ball went off his glove and rolled for awhile. Lubanski would reach second on base. Walter Sevilla then singled to center to drive home Lubanski. Mitch Maier doubled to center, Sevilla would get to third. After that Dunwell struck out both Kila Kaaihue and Adam Donachie for the first two outs. Brandon Powell then walked to load the bases. Luis Gonzalez would reach on a fielder's choice, with Powell being out at second.
In the second inning the Bees scored another run. Bryan Graham singled to left. Jeff Barry then singled through the hole, as the Bees had the hit and run play on. Graham would get to third. Lubanski then struck out for the first out. Sevilla would fly to center, on the play Graham tagged up and scored from third. Maier then doubled to right, Barry would stop at second. Kaaihue ended the inning by being caught looking.
With one out in the third, Powell hit one off of Dunwell, that second baseman Luke Appert got to and threw into the dirt, for an error. Gonzalez doubled just past the third baseman and into the corner to allow Powell to score. Graham flew to center, on the play Gonzalez would tag up and get to third. Barry then lined one to right for the third out.
Another run for the Bees in the fourth inning, this time with two outs. Maier singled to right, then stole second. Kaaihue would double to center to score Maier. The Cougars then brought in Brigmer Leon to replace Dunwell. He struck out Donachie to end the inning.
Finally the Cougars would show some signs of life in the fifth inning. With one out Brian Ingram walked. Followed by a Luke Appert walk. David Castillo then doubled to left to score Ingram. Spanos would then walk to load the bases. Brian Snyder struck out to end the inning.
Two runs for the Cougars in the seventh inning. With two outs, Castillo would reach on an error by the first baseman. Spanos followed that with a double to left to score Castillo. Snyder singled to right to score Spanos. This cut the Bees lead to one run.
It took untill the bottom of the ninth but the Cougars would tie the game and have a good chance to win it. Ingram led off with a single to center. Appert then bunted him over to second. Castillo walked, he would be pitch run for with Nick Rogers, that would be the winning run on first base. The Bees then made a pitching change, to bring in Dusty Dossett. Spanos lined out to center for the second out. Snyder singled just past the first baseman to drive home Ingram to tie the game. With runners on first and third with two outs, Dustin Majewski came up. He would ground out to first to end the inning and send it into extra innings.
The Bees had plenty of chances to win the game throughout. In the seventh they had a big chance as Cougar manager Dave Joppie really gambled. Maier led off with a double to left. Kaaihue was intentionally walked. Donachie moved the runners along with a bunt. Powell would then be intentionally walked, this time to load the bases with only one out. Gonzalez then grounded one to short, and Ingram turned the double play to end the inning.
In the eleventh inning the Bees had the bases loaded with only one out. Lubanski had led off with a single to right. Sevilla then singled to short. Maier moved the runners along with a groundout to second. Kaaihue would be intentionally walked again, to load the bases. The Cougars then replaced Jairo Garcia with Jose Corchado. Corchado looked really good again. He would strike out both Donachie and Powell to get out of the inning.
The final chance for the Bees would be bases loaded again, the Cougars were really playing with fire. Lubanski led off with a single to short, he beat the throw from short. A wild pitch moved him to second. Sevilla then moved him to third with a bunt. Maier was then intentionally walked. Kaaihue would strike out for the second out. Donachie walked to load the bases. Powell then grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Cougars also had their chances to end the game but just couldn't get it done. In the eleventh they had the bases loaded. With one out Rogers would reach on an error by the short stop. Spanos then grounded one to third. The throw from the third baseman was low and couldnt be picked it rolled down the line. Rogers went to third and Spanos went to second.The Bees intentionally walked Snyder to load the bases. Majewski would reach on a fielder's choice, on the play Castillo would be thrown out at home for the second out. Wayment then hit the first pitch, again. He reached on a fielder's choice with Majewski being out at second to end the inning.
