Kane County Cougars at Peoria Chiefs
June 30th, 2003
Joe Blanton pitched six inning of shutout ball to help the Cougars to a 1 to nothing win over the Peoria Chiefs. It was the fifth time this year the Cougars have beatin the Chiefs in five chances.
Blanton gave up five hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts. He did a great job of getting out of three very tough jams in the early innings. In the first inning he got out of a bases loaded and two out jam. He struck the first two hitters he faced out, then walked Travis Hanson. John Santor then singled to center to move Hanson to second. Chase Voshell then walked which loaded the bases. Tim Lemon struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
With one out in the third inning Mike McCoy singled to left. He would get to second on a bad pickoff throw from Blanton. Travis Hanson grounded out to second to move him over to third with two outs and the game still scoreless. John Santor then grounded out to short to end the inning.
In the fifth inning he got out of a jam with three runners reaching in the inning. Milko Jaramilo singled to start things. Tyler Parker then put down a sacrifice bunt. Blanton pounced on it and threw to second to get Jaramilo out. Matt Lemanczyk then would reach on a fielder's choice, with Parker being out at second. After this the Cougars had a collective brain freeze. Lemanczyk tried to steal second, and catcher John Baker threw through to the base. Only one problem nobody covered the bases. Both John McCurdy and Francis Gomez were standing on either side of the base about five feet from it with their hands up saying what happend. The runner would get to third as the ball went into center field. Mike McCoy then struck out to end the inning.
The Cougars bullpen did an outstanding job in relief of Blanton. Matt Lynch who made his professional debut tonight. He was the tenth pick of the Athletics in this years draft. He pitched and inning, giving up only one walk. Chris Dunwell pitched an inning gviing up only one hit. Edwardo Sierra closed out the game with a perfect ninth with two strike outs.
Kane County had an oppourtunity to score in the fourth inning. John McCurdy led it off with an infield single to second. John Baker then single to third, on the play the ball went off of the third basemans glove. Both runners would advance when Peoria pitcher Josh Teekel tried a pickoff play at second base and the ball went off of the short stops glove and into the outfield. With runners on second and third and nobody out. Nelson Cruz came up, he grounded out to third. Brian Stavisky then struck out. Marcus McBeth would then ground out to third to end the inning.
Finally the Cougars would put up a run in the seventh. Nelson Cruz was hit by a pitch. Brian Stavisky would then reach on a fielder's choice, with Cruz being out at second. Marcus McBeth reached on a Baltimore chop single. Brant Colamarino then singled to left to load the bases. Chris Tritle singled to center to score Stavisky. The Chiefs then made a pitching change. Kory Wayment would strike out. Francis Gomez then grounded out to short to end the inning.

Notes-For the first time this year that I have seen, Eddie Williams wore his number 77 jersey during hte game, usually he wears a sweatshirt with the A's logo on it. I dont blame him for not wearing the sweatshirt it was 90+ degress at game time. Nelson Cruz came out of the game after being hit in the arm by a pitch
