Kane County Cougars at Quad City River Bandits

July 2nd, 2004

Good pitching usuall beats good hitting, i this case it did. The Cougars had their leadoff man on base every inning between the second and the fifth, they would only score two runs. One baserunning error and one double play really cost them.

Scott Tyler went the first three innings for the Swing. He would give up two hits. In the second inning Vasili Spanos led off with a single to center. Dustin Majewski then struck out. Kory Wayment would then pop out to the second baseman. Spanos then lumbered into second base, on a steal. Eddie Kim would end the inning with a fly to left. The third inning saw the Cougars strand the base loaded. David Harriman led off by being hit by a pitch. Luis Perez followed that with a single to center. Brian Ingram moved the runners along with a bunt. Luke Appert would make the second out with a liner to short. Brian Snyder then walked which loaded the bases. Spanos hit one to the warning track in right to end the inning.

Normally its a good thing when their starter gets taken out after three innings, but Kevin Culpepper pitched the next three innings and limited the damage the Cougars would do. He gave up five hits but only two runs. In the fourth inning the Cougars would finally get on the board. Majewski led off with a single to second. Wayment then was hit by a pitch. On strike three to Kim, the ball got away from the catcher and both runners moved up. Harriman singled to left to bring home Majewski. Perez would strike out for the second out. Culpepper tried to pick off Harriman, but instead ended up getting Wayment out at the plate on a caught stealing. The play went pitcher to first, to short, to the catcher.

The fifth inning saw the Cougars get another run. Ingram led off with a walk. Appert then singled to center. Snyder would single to right to load the bases. Spanos flew out to left, Ingram would tag up and score on the sacrifice fly. Majewski then hit into an inning ending double play.

The only other time the Cougars would have any chace would be the seventh inning when they had two runners on. With one out Appert singled to left. Snyder then singled to center. Spanos would then strike out for the second out. Majewski then reached on a fielder's choice, with Snyder being out at second to end the inning.

The Cougars found creative ways to give this game up to the Swing, it would've been a lot closer if not for so many mistakes. In the second inning the Swing scored three runs. With one out Scott Whitrock singled to center. Kyle Geiger then singled to left. One out later Mark Zamojc would triple to left to score both Whitrock and Geiger. Paul Rutgers then singled to right to score Zamojc.

In the fifth the Cougars just imploded on defense and on the mound. Rutgers led off by being hit by a pitch. J.R. Taylor then double to left. Rutgers would be thrown out at the plate. Justin arneson would single to the pitch. Brock Peterson grounded one to third. Spanos tried to back hand the ball and missed it. On the play Taylor would score. The Cougars then made a pitching change to bring in Brigmer Leon in place of Trent Peterson. Peterson would strike out Omar Burgos for the second out. Whitrock would reach on a droped third strike. This would load the bases. Geiger then singled to short, Arneson scored on the play. Dusty Gomon was then hit by a pitch, this forced in Peterson from third.

The final two runs for the Swing were in the eighth inning. With one out Gomon walked. Zamojc singled to right. A wild pitch would move the runners along a base. Rutgers then flew to center, on the play Gomon tagged up and score. Taylor doubled to the right field corner to score Zamojc.
