River Bandits infielder Garrett Jones tied some Midwest League records today against the Cougars. He hit four homers, and had eight runs batted in. Oh by the way the Cougars got clobberd today 16-2.
The last time and opponent hit four homers was a game that many Cougar fans remember. Sept 13th, 1999, bersus Burlington, then a White Sox affiliate. Eric Battersby hit four homers, and sent us packing from the playoffs that night. It was game three of the semifinals.
There was just no protection against this lineup today. The Bandits got 17 hits and 16 runs. They batted around in the second inning. In that inning they sent up the first nine. All nine of them reached base saftley. All nine of them would score a run in the inning.
The scary part of the game was the fact that the Cougars were actually leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the second. After that they just couldn't get anything going.
The scoring starting in the first inning. Charles Frazier led off the game with a single to second. Kris Clute then popped up a bunt for the first out. Jason Stokes singled to center, on the play Frazier would get to third. Scott Hicks then popped up to center. Michael Tucker singled to center to score Frazier.
The Cougars scored another run in the second. With one out Jason Helps singled to short. Anthony Brewer would reach on an error by the third baseman. The throw was high. Charles Frazier doubled to left to score Helps.
The slaughter would start in the second. Brett Tamburrino singled to right. Bryan Kennedy then walked. Seth Davidson walked to load the bases. Ricky Manning then walked, on the play Tamurrino score. James Tomlin singled to left to score both Kennedy and Davidson. Tomlin would steal second. Jesus Merchan then was hit by a pitch. He was hit on the arm/wrist and had to be taken from the game. Jake Mauer came in to replace him. After that Jon Asahina was taken from the game. The Cougars brought in Wes McCrotty. Joe Mauer singled to center to score both Tomlin and Jake Mauer. Garrett Jones then hit a solo shot to right for his first homer of the game. After that McCrotty settled down and retired the next three in a row to get out of the inning.
In the next inning McCrott did a nice job of getting out of a little bit of trouble. Ricky Manning led of with a single to second, he would get to second on a wild pitch. James Tomlin grounded out to third, on the play Manning made it to third. Jake Mauer flied out to center. Joe Mauer then lined out to center to end the inning.
Back to back homers in the fourth would give the Bandits a 11-2 lead. Michael Sandoval led off with a homer of the Puppy Chow sign in left field. Garrett Jones then hit his second homer of the games to right.
In the fifth inning the Bandits would score three more runs. With one out Jake Mauer would reach on an error by third baseman Michael Tucker. On the play Tucker bobbled the grounder. Joe Mauer then doubled to center to score Jake Mauer. Michael Sandoval struck out. Garrett Jones came up and guess what, he hit a homer to right field.
The Bandits would not score in the sixth or seventh, but in the eighth they scored another run. Garrett Jones came up and hit an absoulute bomb to right for his fourth homer of the game.
