Kane County Cougars at West Michigan WhiteCaps
July 18th, 2004
The Cougars did a nice job of not panicing like some of their fans were thinkin about doing. They would score a run in the ninth inning to break the five all tie. The reason they had to do that is because the bullpen gave up five runs in the eighth inning.
Chris Dunwell pitched a great game. He went seven innings giving up only three hits and one walk. Dunwell struck out seven. The third inning was a good example, Luis Sabino led off with a single to left. Jason Knoedler then was caught looking on the fourth pitch of his at bat for the first out. Juan Francia lasted seven pitches but would also be caught looking, he argued with the ump a little about the call. Vince Blue then lasted nine pitches untill Dunwell finally got him to strike out, this time swingin to end the inning.
The offense came to the Cougars today as they put up six runs. In the first inning they would come up with two runs on one swing of the bat. Brian Ingram led off the game with a walk. Two outs later, Vasili Spanos deposited a ball over the deck in left field for his eleventh homer of the season. In the fourth inning the Cougars would come up with one more run. Dustin Majewski led off with a walk. Trevor Brown then singeld to left. Chris Tritle followed that up with a single to right to load the bases. Nick Rogers hit a fly to left, Majewski would tag up and score from third. Ingram would line out to center for the second out. Luke Appert grounded to first to end the inning.
Before everything would seem to cave in for the Cougars they would score two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. With one out Eddie Kim took a pitch over the right field wall for his fifth homer of the year. The Whitecaps then made a pitching change. Dan Zell came on for starter Brian Rogers. Zell would walk Majewski on five pitches. On succesive pitches to Trevor Brown, Zell would throw a wild pitch to allow Majewski to get to second. The Majewski stole third. Bown ended up striking out two pitches later. Chris Tritle singled to left to score Majewski to give the Cougars the five run lead.
Implotion isnt a pretty sight, especially for a bullpen. Brigmer Leon came on to start the eighth inning in relief of Dunwell. Wilton Reynolds greated him with a single to center. Leonthen struck out Luis Sabino. Jason Knoedler hit a liner over Majewski's head and against the wall to get Reynolds home. Juan Francia singled to right to score Knoedler. One out later, Kelly Hunt singled to left to score Francia. The Cougars then made a pitching change to bring in Dan Fyvie. Kody Kirkland would single to center to get Hunt to third. A wild pitch moved Kirkland to second. Danilo Sanchez then walked to load the bases with two outs. Eric Rodland singled to left to score Hunt and Kirkland. Fyvie would get out of it by getting Reynolds to fly to center to thankfully end the inning.
In the top of the ninth the Cougars had some magic left in their bats. Ingram led off with a walk. Appert tried to put down a bunt on the first two strikes but couldn't. He then swung away and struck out for the first out. One out later, the Caps made a pitching change, bringin in Anthony Tomey. Tomey walked Spanos. Eddie Kim then doubled down the left field line to bring home Ingram.
