The wind was blowing out and the score relects it. The Cougars lost 16-12, it looked a lot worse than it actually was. There were a combined eight errors, and 35 hits.
In the first inning the Kernels scored six runs and made it a long inning. Felix Nunez led off with a triple to center. Ryan Leahy then walked. Matt Pali singled to center to score Nunez. Bobby Wilson struck out looking. Baltazar Lopez then doubled to right to score both Leahy and Pali. Balke Balkcom then tripled to center to score Lopez. Matt Brown would then reach on an error by the third baseman Kory Wayment, the ball went through his legs. Balkcom would score on the error. Brown then stole second base. Catcher Trevor Brown's thrown went into center. Brown went to third. Tommy Duenas then struck out, but made it to first on a droped third strike wild pitch. Duenas then stole second, Brown's throw again went into center. This time Matt Brown would score. Billy Boyer would then strike out for the second out. Nunez grounded out to shrot to end the inning, thankfully. Mike McGirr started for the Cougars and basically took it on the chin the whole game.
The Cougars would then come back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Brian Ingram triple to right. Luis Perez then walked. Luke Appert hit his team leading 13th homer of the year to cut the lead in half. Eddie Kim would walk. Trevor Brown then struck out looking. Dan Putnam singled to left. A wild pitch would then move up on a wild pitch. This ment runners on second on third with one out. Kory Wayment then popped out to short. Dustin Majewski would ground out to second to end the inning.
The first inning took almost 45 minutes. The second inning would not take as long since McGirr got the side retired without a run scored. The Cougars would score a run. Nick Rogers singled to center, he would get all the way to third on an error by the center fielder. Brian Ingram would pop up foul to third. Perez singled to second, Rogers woudl score.
Lopez led off the third inning for the Kernels with a single to center. Balkcom doubled to center to score Lopez. Cedar Rapids added three more runs in the fourth inning. Nunen singled to right to led off the inning. Leahy singled to center. Matt Pali then was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bobby Wilson would reach on a fielder's choice, Wilson grounded to Wayment at third who threw home and got Nunez at the plate. Baltazar Lopez then doubled to center, it fell just past Majewski. Leahy, Pali and Wilson would all score to make the score ten to four.
Majewski led off the fourth inning by reaching on an error by the second baseman. Rogers then doubled down the left field line. Ingram grounded out to second, Majewski would score. Luis Perez then reached on a fielder's choice. On the play Rogers would get into a rundown between third and home. He would be out, Perez for some reason went to second. He would be out.
Tommy Duenas hit a solo homer onto the left field deck. Boyer singled to center. Nunez would reach on an error by Appert. Leahy then grounded into a double play. With one out in the sixth, Lopez walked. Balkcom then doubled to center to score Lopez.
Five runs were scored in the seventh inning. The Kernels would score three of them. Boyer singled to center. Nunez then singeld to center. Leahy would ground out to second. Pali was intentionally walked to load the bases. Wilson singled to left to score Boyer. Lopez reached on a fielder's choice, Wilson would be out at second, Nunez would score. Balkcom singled to right to score Pali. Matt Brown struck out to end the inning.
Rogers led off the inning with a walk. Ingram would then follow with a single to center. Perez singled to left to load the bases. Appert would reach on a fielder's choice, with Perez out at second, and Rogers scoring. Eddie Kim hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Ingram.
Felix Nunez hit a solo homer onto the left field deck with two outs in the eight. The Cougars would come back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Putnam led off with a single to right. One out later Chris Tritle who had come in an inning before fro Majewski, he singled to right. Nick Rogers then singled to center to load the bases. Ingram would ground out to first, Putnam would score. Perez then grounded out to first to end the inning.
Lopez led off the ninth inning with a single to first. One out later, Lopez tried to go to second on a wild pitch, he would be caught stealing. Matt Brown then triple to center. Chris Tritle dove for the ball near the wall, in the ninth inning of a 16-8 game. Duenas then popped out to left to end the inning.
The offense woke up in the bottom of the ninth to score four runs. Appert lined out to the track in right. Kim then doubled down the right field line. Trevor Brown singled to left. Appert would score, the throw home went into the dugout and ment Brown went to third. Putnam walked. Wayment hit a homer to center.
