Can the Cougars hit for more than just one inning, thats all that the hit for today and they lost 7-2 to the Burlington Bees. In the first inning they scored twice on three hits. After that inning they wouldn't score again and would get two hits, both by Luke Appert. They would strand both runners.
Justin Sherman and Steve Bray pitched brillantly for the Bees. Sherman pitched the first six innings. Bray pitched the final three giving up only one walk.
The Cougars started off very well, or so it seemed untill base running mistakes took them out of the inning. Brian Ingram led off with a single to right. Luke Appert then walked. Dustin Majewski singled to center. Cougar manager Dave Joppie held Ingram at third, why?. That is untill the centerfielder Chris Lubanski bobbeld the ball and Ingram came home just before the throw home. Eddie Kim followed with a double off the right center field wall. Appert would score. Majewski almost got caught up in a rundown but the throw went home instead. He was between second and third, while Kim was getting into second base. Dan Putnam grounded to second, with the infield in to prevent any more damage ont he scoreboard. The Cougars just didnt react to that very well, as all of the runners just froze in place. The Bees would then get Kim between second and third for the out. Runners were now on first and third with one out. David Castillo struck out. David Harriman popped out to short.
After that, Kory Wayment led off the second by reaching on an error but would be doubled up on a ball hit by Nick Rogers. Appert led off the third with a single to center. Majewski struck out. Kim would pop out ot left, the leftfielder threw to first to get Appert off of the base, because he throught the ball was going to fall in and he was around by second base already. In the sixth Appert led off with a double to right. Two fly outs and a strike out later, the Cougars were headed back out to the field. David Castillo led off the seventh with a walk. A lineout and two strike out later it was more of the same.
The Bees had one huge inning, thats really all that they needed. Ed Lukas led off the fourth by reaching on an error by Ingram. Lubanski singled to right. Kenard Springer singled to left to bring home Lukas. Kila Kaaihue walked to load the bases. Kevin Reinking doubled to center to bring home both Lubanski and Springer. Miek Gaffney singled to right to bring home Kaaihue. One out later Brian Graham singled to left to bring home Reinking.
Chris Dunwell had one really bad inning but besides that didnt pitch that badly. He got out of the first with a double play, the second with a fielder's choice. The fourth was just a loss cause. The fifth he came back and retired the side in order. The best pitching was done by the bullpen. The newest Cougar Jason Windsor came in to replace Dunwell and pitched one and two third scoreless innings. He gave up an intentional walk, and was able to get out of a mess that Dunwell left him with.
In the sixth ininng with one out Gaffney singled to center. Cole Hilt was hit by a pitch. Graham then walked which loaded the bases. Brandon Powell would double to center to score both Gaffney and Hilt. Windsor got Lukas to ground out to third for the second out. He intentionally walked Lubanski which reloaded the bases. Springer would line out back to him to end the inning.
Manny Rodriguez pitch a good inning he did have to get out of some trouble though. With one out, Powell singled to center. One out later Lubanski grounded one to first, Rodriguez didnt get over fast enough to cover the bag. A passed ball would then move the runners along into scoring position. Rodriguez would strike out Springer to end the inning. Mike McGirr really pitched well. He walked the first man but was able to get a line out. He then struck out the final two hitters. Luke Appert reached base three out of the four times he came up. He had two of the Cougars five hits.
