The Yankees went bombs away today as they scored 12 runs on 18 hits, and that was all before the seventh inning. Jon Urick hit two three run homers for the Yankees.
The beating started in the first. With one out Hector Made singled to right. Erold Andrus then singled through the hole on the hit and run, Made made it to third. Urick hit his eleventh homer of the season this one over the right field fense. The Yanks werent done yet, this inning. Matt Carson singled to right. Bryce Kartelr would strike out, on the play Carson stole second. David Harriman's throw went into center field. Rafael Rodriguez doubled to center to score Carson. Cougar starter Chris Dunwell struck Willie Vasquez out to end the inning.
Battle Creek scored four more runs in the second inning. Luis Robels led things off with a double to left. Nick Walsh then singled to left, Robles went to third. Made hit a fly to left, Robles tagged up and scored. Andrus singled to left. A wild pitch moved the two runners into scoring position. Urick then came up and hit another three run homer. The Cougars then took Dunwell out and brought in Manny Rodriguez. Carson would greet Rodriguez with a single to right. One out later, Rodriguez reach on an error by third baseman Brian Snyder, Carson went to third. Vasquez grounded out to short to end the inning.
The Cougars would get some offense in, at least early they would. In the first inning, Brian Ingram singled to short. Two outs later Eddie Kim beat out a grounder to short. Yes, I said Kim did, it was in the hole. Snyder singled to right to score Ingram. Wow, the Cougars finally scored a two out run.
With two outs in the second, Nick Rogers walked, he went to second on a wild pitch. Ingram reach on an error by thirdbaseman Vasquez. Rogers would score on the play. Amazing as the two out run was, the Cougars would score three times in the third inning, to make it a three run game.
David Castillo singled to left. Kim singled to right. One out later Dustin Majewski singled to center to load the bases. Dan Putnam singled to left to score Castillo. Harriman followed with a fly to right, Kim tagged up and scored. Rogers doubled to right to score Majewski. This is too much, a bases loaded run, this team is amazing.
Ok, back to reality, the Yanks scored three more runs in the fourth inning. Urick led off with a single to center. Carson singled to left. Rodriguez balked the runners into scoring position. Rafael Rodriguez then singled to left to score both Urick and Carson. Rodriguez then stole second. Vasquez walked. Runners on first and second with one out. Luis Robles would reach on a fielder's choice, Vasquez would be out at third. Walsh put down a perfect bunt single to third to score Rodriguez. That was a really smart play, considering that Snyder is playing third and he is still recovering from injury. Made struck out to end the inning.
Mike McGirr pitched his best game of the year. He followed Rodriguez out of the pen, and would finish the game. In the fifth inning Andrus singled to right. Urick then doubled off the centerfield wall, they held Andrus at third, he could've easily scored. McGirr then came back and struck out Carson and Kartler. Rodriguez would ground one back to him to strand the two runners.
McGirr did give up one run and it was in the sixth inning. Vasquez led off with a single to center. Robles grounded out to short, Vasquez went to second. A wild pitch moved him to third. Walsh hit a fly to center, and Vasquez tagged up and just made it under the tag of Harriman.
McGirr struck out the first two in the seventh, then Carson singled to right, a wild pitch moved him to second. Kartler walked. Rodriguez would ground back to him to end the inning.
The offense went into hibernation after the third inning as they did nothing. The only two hits were in the ninth, and that was down seven runs. An error and two walks is all the Cougars would manage the besides that the final six innings. The Yankee bullpen was great, Amad Stephens, Heath Castle, Paul Thorp and Mike Gardner combined for six innings. In those six they would strike out five.
