Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
August 29th, 2004
Game 1
A two run fifth inning helped the Cougars beat the Snappers 3-2 in game on of the double header. Dallas Braden pitched well in his six innings of work.
He gave up four hits and two runs. Only one of those runs were earned. Dallas walked one and struck out five. A leadoff double to start the game off wasnt a good sign but he was able to pitch out of it without giving anything up.
The defense didnt help things in the second inning as two errors would help the Snappers score the games first run. With one out, Grant Richardson grounded one to short, Eddie Kim at first shouldve been able to get the throw but couldnt. The error went to the short stop Jesse Acosta. Steve Moss then reached on an error by second baseman Brian Ingram. Manuel Ramirez would reach on a fielder's choice, with Richardson being out at third. Wandel Campana singled to center to drive home Moss. Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch. Guilder Rodriguez then grounded out to second to end the inning.
Lou Palmasiano led off the fourth inning with a double to left. Richardson grounded out to short, but Palmasaino moved to third on the play. Moss would get him in with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Cougars finally scored some runs starting in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eddie Kim led off the inning with a single to center. Brian Snyder then doubled to left to score Kim. A wild pitch moved Snyder to third. Dan Putnam struck out. David Harriman would pop out to left. Kory Wayment was caught looking to end the inning and strand Snyder at third.
The next inning the Cougars would score the other two runs they would need to win the game. Jesse Acosta led off with a walk. He as caught trying to steal second. Ingram singled to right. Nick Rogers then singled to center. Vasili Spanos singled to left to score Ingram. Kim doubled to right to score Rogers. Spanos would be caught at the plate. I thought he was safe, Cougar manager Dave Joppie went nuts and was ejected. Vasili Spanos had to be restrained to keep him in the game. Snyder struck out to end the inning.
Both teams had other chances to score in the game, the Snappers had four and the Cougars had one. Beloit had a man on third in the fifth . With two outs Terry Trofholz singled to left. Braden had him picked off of first but a bad throw by Kim, and Acosta dropping the ball didnt help. Trofholz then stole second base. Drew Anderson walked. Vinny Rottino poped out to second to end the inning with out any damage being done. In the seventh inning the Snappers almost tied the game. Ramirez led off with a double to left. Robby Deevers then came in to pitch run for him. Campana bunted him over to third. Jason Windsor who had just came on in the top of the ining then struck out both Rodriguez and Trofholz to end the game and preserve the Cougar win.
The Cougars sqanderd a chance in the third inning. With one out, Wayment and Acosta both walked. Ingram then struck out. Rogers singled to short to load the bases. Spanos would reach on a fielder's choice, with Rogers out at second.
