This team is so frustrating sometimes. In the sixth inning Brigmer Leon walks Jeff Cook with the bases loaded to score Edgar Varela for the eventual game winning run.
That sixth inning started off with Varela singling to first. Two outs later, Leon walks, Emilo Bonafacio, Jon Caplan and then Jeff Cook.
The game was started off well for the Cougars as they would take the lead in the first. With one out Luke Appert singled to center. One out later Vasili Spanos singled to the pitcher. The pitcher Garret Mock threw the ball into right field. That allowed Appert to score and Spanos to get to second. Dan Putnam grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Cougars would only score on e more run in the game but they had their chances to score and just couldnt get the hit when they really needed it. In the second inning, Trevor Brown led off with a single to left. Two outs later Nick Rogers singled to left. Brian Ingram then walked, that loaded the bases with two outs. Luke Appert struck out.
In the third inning with one out, Spanos walked. Putnam then hit into an inning ending double play. In the fourth inning Brown led off with a walk. Two pop outs and a strike out would cancel that threat. In the eighth, Spanos and Putnam both walked. Brown poped up a bunt for the first out. Eddie Kim then hit into an inning ending double play.
They did score a run in the fifth inning. With one out Appert tripled to center, the centerfielder dove and missed and Appert was just safe. He would turn his ankle sliding into third. David Castillo single over the drawn in infield to score Appert.
The Hawks couldve just blown us right out of the place, but they too couldnt get the hit when they needed it the most. In the first inning with one out Cook walked. One out later, Chris Carter reached on an error by first baseman Eddie Kim. Cook went to third on the play. Brian Rose then hit one to the track in right to end the inning. In the second a one out walk would be stranded at second after a stolen base.
South Bend got thier first run of the game in the third inning with a two out homer by Alex Frazer to left center for his 20th of the season. After the homer Carter singled off the top of the right field wall. Rose then singled to center. Edgar Varela would fly out to short to end the inning.
The fouth saw the Hawks tie the game. With one out Alberto Gonzalez singled to left. Bonafacio would reach on a fielder's choice, Gonzalez was out at second. Bonafacio then stole second and third. He would come home on the throwing error by catcher Brown on the steal of third. Jon Caplan then doubled to left. Cook grounded out to second to thankfully end the inning.
The Hawks had one more chance. In the eighth inning Augie Murilo led off by reaching on an error. Gonzalez bunted him over to second. Bonafacio was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Caplan lined out to left for the second out. Cook would reach on a fielder's choice, with Bonafacio out at second to end the inning.
Mike McGirr didnt pitch that badly in his first start for the Cougars in awhile. He got through five innings, giving up only three hits and the two runs.
