The Cougars played dead for eight innings today as they were losing 11-2. An amazing thing happend in the ninth, they scored six runs and had a chance to actually win the game.
Lansing just over powerd the Cougars pitching today. Dallas Braden started and after giving up a grand slam in the first, he pitched well for three innings beofre giving it up in the fifth.
Chris Walker led off the game with a single to center. Tony McQuade then singled to center. Brian Dopirak then walked which loaded the bases. Kevin Collins hit one to center. After that Braden got Drew Larsen to line to left. Jake Fox lined to right and Robinson Chirinos struck out.
In the fifth the Lugnuts scored three more runs and seemed to be headed for even more. Alberto Garcia led off with a single to center. Walker then doubled to left. McQuade hit a ground rule double to left to score both Garcia and Walker. Dopirak was intentionally walked. Colins then walked which loaded the bases. The Cougars then made a pitching change. Brining in Brigmer Leon to replace Braden. On the first pitch he hit Drew Larsen to bring home McQuade. Brigmer then settled down a retired the next three in a row.
Two more runs for Lansing in the seventh. With one out Kevin Collins singled to right, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Larsen would reach on an error by Vasili Spanos. Jake Fox then grounded one to Trevor Brown at first. He tried to start the double play and threw the ball into left field. The bases were now loaded. Chirinos grounded out to first, on the play Collins scored. Rojas then singled to short, to allow Larsen to score.
The final two runs for the Nuts were in the eighth inning. Walker led off with a single to short. McQuade then singled to right. Dopirak walked, to load the bases. The Cougars then made a pitching change. Justin Crowder came in for Jason Windsor. Crowder got Collins to pop out to left. Larsen singled to left to score Walker. Fox grounded out to third to allow McQuade to score.
Belive it or not the Cougars did play offense in the game. In the fifth, Trevor Brown led off with a homer to left center. In the sixth Jesse Acosta led off with a walk. One out later Brian Snyder singled to short. He aggravated his hip injury and was pitch run for by Brian Ingram. Spanos doubled to right to score Acosta.
The big inning for the Cougars was the ninth. With one out, Kory Wayment walked. David Harriman then singled to center. Chris Tritle would single to right to score Wayment, both runner moved up on a wild pitch. Acosta singled to left to score Harriman. Rogers singled to right to score Tritle. Eddie Kim, who had pitch hit for Ingram the last inning then came up. Kim doubled down then right field line to score Acosta. The Nuts made a pitching change. Spanos single up the middle to score both Rogers and amazingly Kim from first. This made it a three run game. Dan Putnam grounded out to second for the second out. Brown then lined to center to end the game.
