Kane County at Wisconsin
April 9th, 2001
Fox Cities Stadium, Appleton, Wisconsin

The Cougars had the offense today but just like the first few games their pitching and deffense came up and bite them. Walks killed them, Brad Haynes had seven walks in two and one thirds innings. Which is one reason why five runs scored against him. Four of the walks that Haynes gave up scored, and in all three of his innings he walked the lead off man. Haynes only gave up one hit and struck out two. In the first inning when he got into trouble he ended the inning with a strike out.

Wisconsin was taking advantage of catcher Dominic Woody today as they stole six bases, three in the first. Chris Key came in with one out in the third and pitched out of a jam, only giving up one run. After that he retired eight straight hitters after he gave up a double and a walk to start out his outing.

Will Smith continued his hot hitting as he now has a five game hitting streak. His three homers in one game was one thing but Smith and Gonzalez seem to be the two most dangerous hitters in their lineup right now.

Jim Kavourias and Kevin Hooper both had two hits. Kavourias also had his first homer of the year.

The scoring started in the bottom of the first when Jamal Strong lead off the inning by walking. Strong then stole second and third on catcher Dominic Woody. On the steal of third Woody's throw was high and it went off of third baseman Josh Willingham's glove and into leftfield, Strong then got up and went home.

The Cougars then evened things up in the second when Jim Kavourias lead off the inning with a double to left. Magness and Cabrera both grounded out, which got Kavourias to third. The Rattlers called a pitching change and the new pitcher then went after Josh Willingham who flied out to center, but after the play, the base ump called a balk which allowed Kavourias to come home to tie things up. Josh Willingham then ended up with a walk. Dominic Woody grounded to third and the third baseman Blake Bone booted the ball, Willingham went to third on the play. The same Rattlers pitcher (Jose Herera) then balked again, this time it allowed Willingham to score and Woody to get to second. Kevin Hooper was next and he lined one down the line in left to score Woody.

Rattlers scored again in the bottom of the inning when Jamie Bubela started off the inning with a walk. He stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Mark Carrol then walked. Corey Freeman grounded out to second, Bubela scored, and Carrol moved to second. Pedro Liriano grounded out for the second out. Jamal Strong walked. Charles Lopez smashed one to rightcenter it hit against the wall for a double. On the play Carrol and Strong would score.

In the third the Cougars scored again this time Will Smith lead the inning off with a single to left. Adrian Gonzalez then singled to center. Jim Kavourias was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pat Magness then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Smith and move Gonzalez to third. Miguel Cabrera then hit a shallow fly to right, Gonzalez tagged up and tried to score on the play and was out at home.

More runs in the bottom of the inning for the Rattlers when Miguel Villilo walked. He advanced to second on a walk. Jamie Bubela then hit a grounder to Cabrera who caught Villilo in a run-down, and Willingham put the tag on him. Bubela then stole second, the Cougars made a pitching change and brought in Chris Key. Mark Carrol doubled to left to move Bubela to third. Corey Freeman then walked. Pedro Liriano hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Bubela to make it a two run lead.

Jim Kavourias hit his first home run of the season in the fifth off of Jose Herrera.

Wisconsin had more in the sixth when with one out Pedro Liriano singled to right. Jamal Strong then bunted to third and Willingham could not bare hand the ball, and Strong was safe. Chuck Lopez then hit one back to the pitcher Key, he threw over to Cabrera at second. Cabrera got the force but with Strong bearing down on him, he bobbled the transfer to his throwing hand, and droped the ball. During all of this Liriano rounded third and went home to give the Rattlers the lead again.

With one out in the seventh the Rattlers struck agian, Jamie Bubela doubled down the line to left. Mark Carrol then singled to left to score Bubela.
