Kane County at Peoria
April13th, 2001
Pete Vonachen Stadium, Peoria, Illinios

It's great when everything comes together at once. The Cougars pitching held up and they continued to their great hitting. The Cougars scored early and held on, to get there third straight victory and their eighth win of the season.

Gustavo Lopez pitched well, even though he gave up some hits and left the door open for more runs against him than the Chiefs were able to get. lopez gave up three hits in the first, all singles, won of which lead to a run. The first inning he was not able to throw all that much in the strike zone. He found the zone in the second, eventhough with an error and a walk, he had runners in scoring position. With a caught stealing by catcher Matt postell and a fielder's choice, and a groundout to first he got out of the inning. The third inning was more of the same where he would give up a double to John Gall then witht he help of a fantastic diving catch by Chip Ambres in centerfield, Gall would be stranded at second. Gustavo's third inning was a one, two, three inning, with a strike out included.

Will Smith had another big day today, going four for five. Smith had a RBI double in the first, a RBI single in the second. Int he fourth he continued the trend by getting a RBI single. The Chiefs finally got him out in the sixth with a grounder to second. Inthe ninth he got his fourth hit another single.

Chip Ambres had a big day also with three hits and a great catch in the field. Chip had a doubled and two singles. He also scored two runs and had a sacrifice bunt. Miguel Cabrera had a good day with three singles and an RBI. The weirdest day went to Pat Magness who when the Chiefs allowed him to put the ball in play went nothing for one with a groundout. He also had three walks.

The bullpen came in and pitched well, first was Hansel Izquierdo who would get the victory. Hansel came in and pitched two innings, giving up nothing but one walk and getting one strikeout. The one walk was Brain Fatur who later in the same inning would be caught trying to steal second by Postell. Randy Messenger was next and he came in for an inning and got two strikeouts. Steve Sawyer saw some duty today with an inning of perfect baseball. Brandon Sloan came in for the ninth and closed out the Chiefs with no problem getting a strikeout for his efforts.

The Chiefs threw Shaun Stokes out for his second start against the Cougars this season and this time he lasted four innings, giving up eight hits and five runs, only four were earned. He walked two and struck out three. At the start of the game the Couagrs were making him work hard by fouling off a lot of pitches in the first. Donovan Graves then came in for two innings and gave up two hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. Carmen Cali then pitched the following two with one walk and he also struck out four Cougars. Santo Santana pitched the ninth and gave up a hit and struck out one.

Offensivley for the Chiefs John gall lead the team with two hits, one RBI and a double.

The scoring started int he first for the Cougars when Chip Ambres lead off the game with a single to center. Will Smith then doubled down the line to left to score Ambres. Adrian Gonzalez then popped out to left. Jim Kavourias and Pat Magness both walked to load the bases. Miguel Cabrera then singled to right to socre Smith. On the play centerfielder Chris Morris overran the ball which allowed Kavourias to score.

The Chiefs would get their lone run of the game in the bottom of the inning when Chris Morris lead off the inning with a single to right, he then stole second base. Brian Fatur then grounded out to second baseman Matt Easterday to get Morris over to third. John Gall followed with a singled to center to score Morris.

Second inning the Cougars tacked up another run when Easterday lead off with a single to center. Ambres then put down a sacrifice bunt to get him over to second. Will Smith then singled to right to score Easterday.

The final run of the game was in the fourth when with two outs Ambres doubled to center, Smith then singled to right to score Ambres.
