Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
April 15th, 2001
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
The Cougars left their bats in Peoria. Ben Hendrickson the Snappers
starter had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and the Cougars
only got five hits in the game. This is compared to ten plus hits the
first nine games of the season, almost every game.
Hendrickson pitched six innings, giving up just that one hits, while
walking two and striking out eight. He retired eleven Cougars in order
at one point through the middle of his outing. Ben got most of his strikeouts
during the later points of the outing.
As for the Cougars starter Marc Sauer just did not have a happy easter
day, as he got roughed up right off the bat and just did not have it
today. Marc got out of a couple of jams but there were just too many of
them for him to contend with.
For the Snappers Michael Shwan did a great job in relief, going three
innings, and giving up four hits, and two runs. He did not walk anybody
and he struck out seven.
The Cougars had Hansel Izquierdo as the first man out of the pen today.
He did a nice job going two and two thirds innings and only giving up
one unearned run. Michael Flannery who had just come up from extended
spring training then came in and went the last two innings giving up
only two hits.
The Cougars only bright spot offensivley was Chip Ambres who had two
hits. Kane County wasn't able to put anything together untill the eighth
inning when they were able to get three hit in a row and break the easter
egg that was on the board.
Eliezer Alfonzo lead the Snappers with three hits and hit the only
homerun of the game. Dave Krynzel, Todd West and Obispo Brito all ended
up with two hits apiece.
The scoring started in the first when Krynzel lead things off with a
single to right. Two out later Eliezer Alfonzo hammered one to left
to make give the Snappers a two run lead.
The Snappers would add more in the third when Travis Hake lead it off
with a double to left. Krynzel then hit a ball off of first baseman Adrian
Gonzalez's glove that deflected to second baseman Matt Easterday, who
threw the ball back to Gonzalez for the 3-4-3 out. Hake went to third.
Todd West then singled to right to score Hake. Brito then doubled to
left to score West.
Beloit took an inning off from the scoring column, but in the fifth
they put two more runs on the board when Krynzel lead things off with a
single to center, then stole second. Todd West then hit a liner to third,
the ball bounced off of the third base bag on a line and past a diving
Josh Wilson to left field. On the play Krynzel would score. Obispo Brito
then singled to left to move West along. Eliezer Alfonzo was then hit
by a pitch. The Cougars then brought in Izquierdo and he got the first
man he saw out. Derry Hammond then singled to right, West would score,
but Brito would be out on a great throw from right fielder Jim Kavourias.
An insurance run in the seventh when with one out Izquierdo hit Brito.
Then Alfonzo doubeld to center. Daryl Clark then grounded out to third,
on the play Brito would score.
The Cougars would give out a low roar in the eighth when with one out
Matt Postell hit a liner that bouced off first base and into rightfield
for a single. Matt Easterday then singled to right. Chip Ambres was next
and he kept thing moving along with a single to right to score Postell.
Will Smith then grounded out to the first baseman unassisted, on the
play Easterday would trot home.

Notes-Marc Sauer had a bad day but, here is something on the bright
side, he countinued his walkless innings streak, which he started last
year, the second to last outing. It is currently at 24 innings.
