Kane County Cougars at Dayton Dragons

The Cougars had chances to win the game but just couldn't capitalize on those chances. They left ten men on, five of those were left in scoring position. Kane County would score in the fourth and the sixth, beisdes those innings they left five men on base in the other innings, three in scoring positon.
Joe Blanton pitched ok, he allowed his first runs of the year after pitching 12 plus innings of scoreless ball. He went six innings, giving up four hits and five runs. He retired the side in order in the first, third and the fifth innings. The only problem was that the Dragons would score in the second and the fourth innings. After the last Dayton run Joe would retire seven of the last nine he faced. Giving up only on hit and one walk.
The Dragons bullpen really is what won the game for them. Joel Barreto who last year pitched for Peoria went two thirds of an inning, He pitched the worse of all of them, allowing two runs in that would be charged to their starter. He faced four men and walked two of them. Edduar Jumelles pitched one and one thirds innings, not allowing a hit. He walked two and struck out three. He also got a big double play in the eighth to cancell a Cougar rally. Todd Coffey closed the ninth for the Dragons getting all three hitters out.
For the Cougars Shawn Kohn came in for relief of Burton and pitched an inning. He gave up on run on two hits. The got part is he struck out the first two hitters he faced before giving up the two hits, and walking one. Jeff Muessig would then com ein for the eighth inning and give up only a hit.
The deciding inning was the fourth for the Dragons as that is when they took the lead. To lead things off Brad Correll would reach on an error by shortstop John McCurdy. Mark Schramek then singled to right. Justin Davis flied to left. Ryan Hanigan singled to right to allow Correl to score. Domonique Lewis then put the dagger in the Cougars hearts with the big hit of the game. He doubled to right to score both Schramek and Hanigan. Luis Bolivar then flied to left to end the inning.
Dayton would score first in the game as they scored in the second inning. Brad Correl walked to lead off the inning. Mark Schramek then singled to left. Justin Davis walked. Ryan Hanigan grounded out to second, on the play Correl would score. Domonique Lewis would ground out to short, on that play Schramek would score. Luis Bolivar then flied to right to end the inning.
Kane County had their chances in the first inning with one out John McCurdy singled to center. Brant Colamarino gorunded out to first. John Baker then singled to right. Nelson Cruz would fly to right to end the threat.
Finally in the fourth inning the Cougars would bite back. Colamarino singled to left. Baker grounded out to first, moving Colamarino to second. Nelson Cruz singled to right to move Colamarino to third. Brian Stavisky then tripled to left to allow both Colamarino and Cruz to score. Kory Wayment would then hit a sacrifice fly to right to allow Stavisky to score to at that point take the lead. Kohn Suomi singled to right. Francis Gomez would then ground out to third to end the inning.
The next inning they would again have a chance to put a good crooked number up on that board. With one out McCurdy singled to left. Colamarino popped up to second. Baker singled to right. With men on first and second and two outs, Nelson Cruz would then strike out to end the inning.
Leading off the sixth inning, Brian Stavisky would reach on atwo base error by the third baseman, he would get to second. On the play the third baseman just dropped an infield pop up. A scary moment came when Dragons pitcher Eddy Valdez attempted a pick off attempt at second. Nobody was home for Dayton but he threw the ball anyway. The ball hit Stavisky in the helmet. He would be fine. Kory Wayment would top one on the ground in front of home plate. The catcher would try to get Stavisky at third but he would be safe. Suomi then reached on a fielder's choice, on the play Wayment would be out at second, and Stavisky would score. Suomi would move up on a couple of wild pitches all the way to third. The Dragons made a pitching change to bring in Jumelles. He got Gomez to pop up to short for the second out of the inning. J.P. Schmidt them walked. He would steal second base. McCurdy would then walk to load the bases. Colamarino then popped up to left to end the inning and strand the bases loaded.
In the seventh inning the Cougars would strand a runner at first base. In the eighth they had one of their best chances to score. With one out Gomez walked. Schmidt then singled to center. McCurdy then came up with two runners on and one out. He would hit into a double play to end the inning.
Offensivly for the Cougar John McCurdy and John Baker both had two hits. Stavisky was on base three of the four times he came to the plate.

This Day In Cougars History (April 16)
1993, Second straight day every Midwest League game is postponed.
1994, The Cougars defeat the Clinton Lumberkings 5-4 behind a seven inning, five hit, nine strikeout performance from Marc Valdez.
1995, Cougars play an unscheduled double header versus Clinton at the Elf. Orginally scheduled to be played at Clinton the game is shifted to Kane County by league president George Spelius after Cougars manager Lynn Jones refuses to allow his team to risk injury by playing on the Kings rocky and rutted home turf.
