Kane County Cougars at Clinton Lumberkings
April 18th, 2001
Riverview Stadium, Clinton, Iowa
Despite two homers from their offense, the Cougars could not pull off
a victory in part because of poor deffense.
The Cougars made three errors in the game, the most costly was a two
run error by right fielder Matt Easterday. Matt is not the usual right fielder,
I believe I heard this was maybe his fourth or fifth game ever in right.
The Lumberkings just were able to capitalize on the Cougars mistakes today,
and have their hitters be able to hit in the clutch, and we didn't that's
just about all you could say about this game.
Gus Lopez pitched well except the last of his innings when things again
for the Cougars fell apart. Gus retired the first eight in a row and had
a no- hitter going into the third with two outs. That hit in the fourth was
the only one he would give up untill the sixth.
After all the damage was done, Chris Key came in and pitch two very
solid innings. Key only gave up a bunt single to the first man he faced.
As for the offense, the Cougars did hit two homers. Dennis Anderson, in
his first game back since returning from Portland hit one in the fifth.
Jim Kavourias hit his league leading fourth homer in the sixth.
As for every one else Chip Ambres had another three hit game. That would
make six for the season in only 13 games. A big improvment over last year's
injury plagued year.
Dennis Anderson and Kevin Hooper also had two hits.
The scoring started in the fifth when Dennis Anderson lead off the
inning with a homer. Matt Easterday then reached on an error by the
shortstop Wilson Valdez. Kevin Hooper then singled to right. After a
fly out by Ambres. Will Smith hit into a fielder's choice at second
base, but on the play Easterday would score.
The Cougars would put one more run on the board, in the sixth when
Jim Kavourias hit a homer.
Then things started to fall apart for Lopez when in the sixth Brandon
Watson lead off with a dribbler to the mound and beat it out. After Jose
Docen got Watson to second with a grounder, Watson would steal third. Grady
Sizemore then reached on an infield single to the firstbaseman Adrian
Gonzalez, on the play Watson would score. Vince Rooi then singled to left.
Dominic Ambrosini then singled to left to load the bases. Clyde Williams
singled to right, but on the play rightfielder Matt Easterday let the ball
get under his glove and keep on rolling. Sizemore, Rooi and Ambrosini would
score. Danny Rombley then grounded to third to allow Williams to score.

Notes-In my opinon Morman left Lopez in too long because you could
visibly see signs of him getting realy tired in about the fifth inning.
Thank You
