Clinton Lumberkings at Kane County Cougars
April 21st, 2001
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

The Cougars offense exploded for twenty hits today as they won by six runs over the Lumberkings to get their teneth win of the season. The pitching gave up 13 hits and six runs though.

Adrian Gonzalez had another huge day as he went 4-5, with a monster homer, and two doubles. Adrian knocked in four runs. Pat Magness who finally played another postion besides designated hitter for the first time this year had two hits. Miguel Cabrera had three hits and scored twice. Josh Wilson finally got his first two hits of the season to end a miserable 0-25 streak to start the season.

Kevin Hooper had a great game he went 2-5, with two singles. The important thing is even as a number nine hitter he was on base all five times he came to the plate. Kevin reached on an error in the fourth. Reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth, and walked in the eighth.

Mike McNutt who deserved to get the win, pitched into the fifth inning. Mike gave up eight hits and two runs, which were both earned. He walked one and struck out six. Chris Key who just got hammerd today, but got credit for the win, went two and one thirds innings and gave up three runs on five hits. Only one of the runs was earned. Steve Sawyer and Rany Messenger both came in for an inning and pitched well.

The Lumberkings just were out powered today as the Cougars just went about as if business was just usual. Critical errors in the field by the Lumberkings and the fact that the wind was blowing strongly to right did not help their cause either.

Clinton was lead offensivly by Phil Downing who had four hits, which were all singles, and he drove in one run and scored one. Thomas Mitchell started for Clinton and just did not have any luck as he lasted into the fourth inning. He gave up eleven hits and six runs. Four of those runs were earned. Jackson Crowther came in for and inning and two third and gave up four hits and four runs, three of those runs were earned. Antonio Garris and Grant Dorn pitched well in relief. Chris Hamrich pitched one inning and gave up two hits and one runs.

The scoring started in the second when Pat Magness lead it off with a bloop single in between the shortstop, leftfielder and centerfielder. Miguel Cabrera then singled to left. On the play Magness trie to score but was out by a long shot. A balk by pitcher Thomas Mitchell would get Cabrera to third. One out later Dominic Woody singled to right to score Cabrera. Woody would advance to second on a bad throw from the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Kevin Hooper then singled to left, Woody would try to score, and he would've made it if he did not try to run over the catcher.

More fun for the Cougars in the third when it was blastoff for a couple of baseballs. Chip Ambres lead off the inning with a walk. He was caught off of first base for the first out. Will Smith then singled to left. Adrian Gonzalez then hit a ball over the new rightfield deck. The next hitter Jim Kavourias then hit one in between the leftfield deck on the scoreboard in leftcenter. That ball almost hit the pop up Wendy's sign.

The Lumberkings would not be shutout on this day as they put one on the board in the fourth, with two outs, Danny Rombley doubled to right. Phil Downing then singled to right to score Rombley.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the inning when Kevin Hooper lead off by reaching on an error by thirdbaseman Vince Rooi in which he just droped the ball. Hooper would get to second on a wild pitch. One out later Will Smith singled to right to score Hooper, the rightfielder Rombley overthrew the catcher David Lutz trying to get Hooper at home and Smith advanced to second. Adrian Gonzalez then singled to center to score Smith.

Fifth inning, the Lumberkings scored a run when Brandon Watson used a good bunt to the first baseman Magness to get on base. Two outs later, Watson was at third and Vince Rooi then singled to left to score Watson.

Four more runs for the Cougars in the bottom of the inning when Miguel Cabrera lead it off with a double to left. Josh Wilson then singled to center to score Cabrera. This was Josh's first hit of the season. Dominic Woody then singled to right. Kevin Hooper hit into a fielder's choice were Woody would be out at second. Chip Ambres then tripled to center to score both Wilson and Hooper. Will Smith then singled to center to score Ambres.

The team kept on trading runs, when in the sixth the Kings scored two more when Phil Downing singled to center. One out later, Wilson Valdez singled. The play was were it was a real tough hop at third for Wilson and he just did not get the hop, and the ball bounced away. Brandon Watson then came up and hit another one towards Wilson at third, Josh threw the ball over Magness's head. On the play Downing and Valdez would score.

Clinton put one more on the board in the seventh when with one out Rombley singled to right. Downing then singled to right. Lutz was next and guess what he singled to right, this time Rombley scored.

The Cougars fininshed the scoring in the bottom of the inning when Kevin Hooper led it off with a single to left, then stole second. One out later Smith walked. Adrian Gonzalez then doubled to cneter off of the top of the wall to drive home Hooper. Later on in the inning Kavourias came up against pitcher Chris Hamrich and on the first strike he let one rip over to the lawn in foul territory in left, he broke that bat. On the next strike he swung at a high fastball and nubbed it foul, he broke another bat. Hunrich then on the next pitch struck him out.
