Cedar Rapids Kernels at Kane County Cougars
Wednesday, April 24th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios

Good pitching and a homer, the Cougars win. This is a way to win, well the 2002 Cougars way. I hope they can remember this so we might see more to come.

Phil Akens pitched pretty well today as he went six innings, he gave up five hits. Only two runs, and only one of those runs were earned. He walked one and struck out six.

In the fourth inning, Phil did a good job of getting out of trouble. Dallas McPherson led things off with a single to right. Greg Porter then grounded into a fielder's choice, with McPherson being out at second. Brent Del Chiaro then singled to right, to move Porter to second. Ryan Nevins then struck out. Tommy Murphy grounded back to the mound to end the threat.

Jon Asahina came in for the seventh and eighth innings and pitched a shutout. Kevin Cave then came in to close the game, he gave up a hit and a walk, but got hte job done.

Johan Santana started for the Kernels, he pitched six innings. He gave up three hits, and three runs. He walked three and struck out nine. Johan retired the first four he faced. After a homer to Jason Stokes he retired the next three on strikes.

In the fifth inning the Cougars had a good opportunity to break the game open. Kris Clute led the inning off with a pop out to short. Rex Rundgren walked. Anthony Brewer singled to left to get Rundgren to second. Scott Hicks grounded back to the mound. Jason Stokes then was intentionally walked to load the bases. George Arnott then flew out to center to end the inning, without a Cougars crossing the plate.

Jason Stokes had two hits, including his third homer of the year. Jason also scored twice. Rex Rundgren tripled to center in the third for his only hit.

The scoring started in the third inning, the Kernels scored first again. Ryan Nevins lead things off with a single to center. Tommy Murphy then walked. Ransel Melgarejo then popped one back behind home plate. Catcher Guy Lynam did a great job of catching the ball, he would end up on his back side. The runners then tried to advance to second and third. Lynam threw to second, the ball got away a little bit. Nevins scored on the play, and error was awarded to Lynam. Justin Turner then lined to center. Jeff Mathis singled to left to score Murphy.

The Cougars would come back with some runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Kris Clute led the inning off with a fly out to right. Rex Rundgren then tripled to center. Anthony Brewer walked. Scott Hicks grounded into a fielder's choice. Brewer would be out at second, Rundgren would score. Jason Stokes then hit a long one onto Louie's Left Field Corner, for a two run blast.

Jason Stokes then led off the eighth with a single to center. George Arnott then bunted him over. The Kernels made a pitching change. Charles Frazier singled to left to get stokes to third. Michael Tucker then reached on an infield single to second. On the play Stokes would score.
