Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
Friday, May 2nd, 2003
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Game 1
The Cougars battled the Chiefs throughout the game and only a seventh inning homer with two outs by Nelson Cruz allowed them to take the game.
Drew Dickinson had another good game, He gave up a single in the first, but left him stranded. Drew did give up a run in the sixth.
In the second inning Dickinson had to work to get out of a jam. He struck out the first two hitters. Reid Gorecki reached on a throwing error by third baseman, Kory Wayment. Gorecki would end up on second. Drew settled down then got Chase Vishell to strike out to end the inning.
Again in the third inning he had to work out of some more trouble. Matt Lemanczyk hit a dribbler in front of the mound and just beat the throw. A sacrifice bunt by Mike McCoy would move him to second. Kyle Boyer then grounded out to third for the second out. Terry Evans grounded out to second to end the inning and the threat.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs starter Miguel Martinez pitched very well. He was perfect through the first eleven hitters. Francis Gomez got the first hit off of him with two outs in the third. After that he retired the next four before giving up a run in the fifth.
In the fifth Nelson Cruz lead off with a double to left. Brian Stavisky then put down a perfect sacrifice bunt and it was just too good of a bunt for the Chiefs to throw him out. Cruz made it to third on the play. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Jason Basil would then reach on a fielder's choice, on the play Cruz would score and Stavisky would be out at second. John McCurdy would hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Chiefs would come right back in the sixth with a run of their own to tie the game. With one out Travis Hanson doubled to right. John Santor grounded out to short. Tyler Parker singled to right to score Hanson.
The game would remain tied going into the bottom of the seventh. Since this is a double header they only play two seven inning games so this was like the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Nelson Cruz who is leading the league in homers, hit a shot onto the deck in left field to win the game.
Just a little note, Nelson Cruz hit his seventh homer of the season. The franchise leader in homers in a season Jason Stokes. Who broke the record last year, hit his seventh homer on May 18th. Jim Kavourias who had the record the year before that hit his eighth homer on May 1st of 2000.

Notes-A foul ball in the third inning off the bat of Kyle Boyer hit off of the metal post of the net behind the plate. The ball hit off the post and went back toward the home plate area. The home plate ump caught the ball bare handed on a nice grab.
