Please forgive me, I'm still trying to get my heart out of my throat.
As a result of the way the Cougars are playing this year. These ninth
inning come backs are going to kill me or drive me even more insaine than
I already am.
Miguel Cabrera came up in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. He
already had two strikes on him, and already had foulded off several pitches.
Miguel stroked one to center, just past the second baseman. Will Smith scored
to give the Cougars another come from behind victory.
The Cougars are now 27-11, this team is the best hitting team I have
ever seen. The club is lead by Adrian Gonzalez who is the best pure hitter
that I have ever seen.
Gus Lopez started for the Cougars and lasted into the seventh. He
gave up four hits and three runs. In his first six innings, Gus did not
let a man go beyond second base except Matt Walker who scored. Lopez got
into trouble in the seventh with one out with a walk and a single. He
was removed from the game after the single. Both of the runs would score
from that inning.
Chris Key just did not have a good day today. He pitched to four batters.
Chris gave up two doubles, a homer, and a single. Three of the four runners
would score. Steve Sawyer then came in and gor Ryan Neil to ground out to
short to end the inning. The next inning he gave up two hits but thanks
to some lucky bounces he did not left either of them get to second. Eudy
Lajara was the last pitcher for the Cougars. He gave up two hits, and allowed
one run. Thanks to a good throw from Jim Kavourais the damage was over.
For the Whitecaps, Lee Rodney started and went six innings. He gave up
three hits and four runs. He walked six which cost him. Two of those walks
would score. Jamie Detillion then cam ein and pitched well. He went two
innings and blanked the Cougars. Michael Steele who throws from down under.
Went one inning and gave up three hits and four runs.
Offensivley for the Cougars, Josh Willingham hit hits fourth homer
of the season. Jim Kavourias then also hit a homer, this time it was his
12th of the season. He is now nine homers shy of the Cougars all time record.
At this rate he might break the record by the all-star break.
Miguel Cabrera played well, he had a triple and a single, he also
drove home four runs. THree of the runs were on the triple. There was
one problem with the offense today. Chip Ambres was up to bat five times.
He flew out to center his first time. After that he walked four straight times.
The first three he did not make it to second base. He fourth time he scored.
Dominic Woody also had a wierd day. His first three times he struck out.
On the third time he was actually safe on a droped third strike. His fourth
at-bat he made it to second on what I believe was a catcher's interferance
call. On that one he would score.
The Whitecaps also had a good day offensivley, Nook Logan, Ronnie
Merrill, Forrest Johnson, and Hugh Quattlebaum all had two hits. Merril
had a two run homer in the seventh.
West Michigan did something that not many teams have done this year.
In the first eight innings, the Cougars got three hits. Two of those hits
were long ball and the other was the triple for Cabrera.
The scoring started in the second for the Cougars when, Josh Willingham led
off the inning with a bomb to straight away center field.
The Cougars added another one in the fourth with one out when Willingham
walked. Cabrera then tripled to center, Willingham scored.
Matt Walker led off the fifth inning by reaching on an infield single
to third. Miles Luuloa then reached on an error by second baseman Josh
Wilson. One out later Hugh Quattlebaum walked. Nook Logan then hit a
sacrifice fly to center, to score Walker.
In the sixth inning the Cougars scored twice more when Gonzalez led off the
inning with a walk. Kavourias then hit a homer.
Things started to fall apart for the Cougars in the seventh when, with one
out Luuloa walked, then advance to both second and to third on wild pitches.
One out later Quattlebaum singled to center to score Luuloa. The Cougars
then made a pitching change. Logan was Key's first opponent, and he doubled
to right to score Quattlebaum. Miles Durham then reached on an infield
single back to the mound. Merrill then hit a three run homer.
In the ninth the Whitecaps added another run to make the score 7-4.
With two outs Merrill would reach on an infield single to third. Forrest
Johnson then singled to right to score Merrill. On the play Kavourias bobbled the
ball and Johnson would try for second and was out.
Now the fun began. Josh Wilson lead off the ninth with a single to right.
Woody then would reach on catcher's interfence. One out laterAmbres walked. Will
Smith then hit one back to the pitcher, Steele. He tried to go tho second
to start the double play but threw the ball over the head of the shortstop.
Wilson would score and everyone moved up one base. Gonzalez then singled
to left to score both Woody and Ambres. Ambres was moving as fast as i've ever
seen him move. One out later Willingham walked. Cabrera then came up and
singled up the middle to score Smith to win the game.
