Lansing Lugnuts at Kane County Cougars
Monday, May 20th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
This was a pitchers duel, that lasted way too long for the weather
of the day. Both bullpens were outstanding in taking the game to the 12th
inning. By the time the game was over it felt like it was in the mid 30's.
Tim Schilling got the spot start for the Cougars since Jeff Fulchino
went on the diasbled list yesterday. Schilling pitched very well in his
longest outing of the year. He last five and two thirds innings. He gave
up only two hits and one run. He did not walk anybody, and struck out four.
After the run scored Tim retired 12 of his last 14 hitters faced.
John Skinner did an awesome job, he went four inning with giving up
only three hits, and most importantly no runs. John got out of trouble in the
tenth after Hector Miliano singled to center. Buck Coats put down a sacrifice
bunt, but first baseman Jason Stokes pounced on it and threw to second to
get Miliano. Joshua Artega popped up to third. Lukas McKnight then
singled to right to get Coats over to third. Manager Steve Phillips then
brought in Kevin Cave to get the final out. Cave got Ryan Theriot to ground
out to short to end the inning.
For the Lugnuts Nick Martin started and pitched well. He went five
innings giving up two hits, and one run. He walked five, which is what
hurt him. Martin also struck out three.
Martin got out of trouble in the first after, Charles Frazier walked.
Anthony Brewer struck out. Frazier then stole second. Scott Hicks grounded
out to third, on the play Frazier moved to third. With a runner on third
and two outs, the Cougars best hitter came up. Jason Stokes who is leading
the minors in hitting, struck out to end the inning.
In the fifth inning Martin also got out of trouble. Dennis Anderson
believe it or not beat out a bunt. The throw was a little wide though.
Rex Rundgren put down a sacrifice bunt to get Anderson to third. This
really was a strange inning because, Anderson didn't only beat out a
bunt but then he stole third. Charles Frazier walked. Frazier was caught
at second trying to steal. Anthony Brewer then grounded out to short to
end the inning.
B.J. Benik then came on for the Lugnuts and pitched three innings,
giving up three hits. Benik was able to get out of some trouble also,
Michael Tucker led off the seventh with a single to right. Heath Kelly
then tried to put down a sacrifice bunt, the only problem was that he
popped it up back to the pitcher. Dennis Anderson then flied to center.
Rex Rundgren singled to center to move Tucker to second. Charles Frazier
singled to right to load the bases. Anthony Brewer hit the ball to thirdbaseman
Joshua Artega who threw to second baseman Ronny Cedeno to force Frazier
at second to end the inning.
Pedro Oliveros was the next Lugnuts pitcher and he went two innings.
Oliveros gave up one hits while also walking one and striking out one. He
also had some trouble to get out of. Heath Kelly almost took one out of
the ballpark to left bunt it hit about at the top of the wall. Kelly would
get a double. Dennis Anderson then popped out to short. Rex Rundgren struck
out. Charles Frazier worked the count very well, for a walk. Anthony Brewer
then grounded out to second to end the inning.
The final two pitchers for Lansing were Eric Brown and Mark Carter.
Both of them pitched perfect innings.
Charles Frazier got on base four out of the five times he came to the
plate. He walked three times, and singled once. He also stole on base, and
was caught stealing once. The only problem is he never touched homeplate.
The scoring started in the second inning, for the Lugnuts when Antoine
Cameron doubled to center. Hector Miliano then flied out to right. On the
play Cameron would tag up and make third. Buck Coats then got Cameron
home with a sacrifice fly to center.
In the bottom of the inning the Cougars tied the game. With one out
Michael Tucker walked. Heath Kelly also walked. Dennis Anderson then doubled
to center to score Tucker. On the play Kelly tried to score but a great realay
from centerfielder Buck Coats, to second baseman Ronny Cedeno then to
catcher Lukas McKnight.
The Lugnuts then won the game in the 12th inning when, Antoine Cameron
doubled to center. He would get to third on a wild pitch. Hector Miliano
then struck out. Buck Coats then singled up the middle to score Cameron.
