Lansing Lugnuts at Kane County Cougars
Tuesday, May 21st, 2002

The Cougars had just enough offense today to win, their first game in
a while, and first of this series. Homeruns accounted for two of the
runs, while one more came on an error.
Ronald Belizario started and pitched ok. He went seven innings, and
gave up six hits. He only gave up two runs, and only walked two. Ron struck
out six.
He got out of some trouble, in the first inning. With one out Corey
Slavik walked. Mike Mallory then singled to center. Antoine Cameron then
grounded to second. Second baseman Heath Kelly tagged Mallory then threw
to first for the double play.
In the second inning, Brad Bouras singled to left to led off the inning.
Buck Coats struck out. Hector Miliano lined out to center. Ryan Theriot
reached on an infield single to short. Warren Hanna then hit a high
foul ball behind the plate, and catcher Winton Zapey caught it for the
final out.
In the ninth, Dave Johnston came in and did a great job in picking up
his first save of the year. He struck out Warren Hanna and Ronny Cedeno
to start the inning. Then he walked Corey Slavik. Johnston started Mike
Mallory out with three straight out of the zone, then he blew three straight
by him to end the game.
Felix Sanchez started for the Lugnuts and lasted five innings. He gave
up four hits, four runs, three walks, and struck out three. Adam
Wynegar then came on too ptiched for two innings, he gave up three hits,
and struck out five. Yorkin Ferreras would pitch the last inning, and get
the loss.
The scoring started in the third for the Cougars. With one out Michael
Tucker walked. Heath Kelly then tripled to left to score Tucker. Rex
Rundgren then would hit a dribbler to third, he would just beat out the
throw, on the play Kelly scored.
The Lugnuts would come back with two runs of thier own in the third
inning. Ronny Cedeno led things off with a single to left. Corey Slavik
then singled to right. Mike Mallory singled to center to score Cedeno.
Slavik and Mallory would advance on a double steal. Catcher Zapey double
clutched before he threw and had no chance. Slavik would score on a balk.
Kane County would come right back to take the lead in the next half
inning. With two outs, Jason Stokes hit one onto the bleachers in right centerfield for his ninth homer
of the season. The next hitter, George Arnott then hit a liner onto the deck
in left field for his fourth of the season.
Antoine Cameron led off the eighth for the Lugnuts with a walk. Brad
Bouras then lined out to right. Buck Coats hit one way out between the
right fied deck and the foul pole, to tie the game.
The Cougars would win the game in the bottom of the inning. Jason
Stokes hit a high pop up to right. The right fielder Hector Miliano basically
just dropped the ball, Stokes hustled into second. George Arnott
and Winton Zapey struck out. Michael Tucker then doubled to center to
score Stokes.

Notes-This is the first time this season that the Cougars have hit
back to back homers, it happend three times last year. The last time
was on the first of June at Beloit. Adrian Gonzalez hit a two run homer
to centerfield, to allow Will Smith to score. Jim Kavouiras followed that
with a solo shot to left field. Both homers were off of Ryan Miller in the 5th inning.
It also happend on 4/21 vs Clinton. Adrian Gonzalez hit a two run
shot over the right field deck to score Will Smith. Jim Kavourias hit
a solo shot to center. Both off of Thomas Mitchell in the 3rd inning. 4/7 vs Peoria, Will Smith
hit a solo shot, and Arian Gonzalez hit another one off of Jeremy Cook in the
third inning. That was the game that Smith had three homers.
