A big seven run inning for the Silver Hawks would drown the Cougars hopes for a double header sweep on Memorial Day. Two homers in that one inning helped do the Cougars in.
Manny Rodriguez did ok for his first start of the season. He really didnt run into much trouble untill the fourth inning. In that inning he gave up two homers. It was the next inning that would do both Manny and the Cougars in. Emilo Bonafacio lead off the fourth with a triple to center. Edgar Varela then doubled to center to drive home Bonafacio. Augie Murilo then singled to center to allow Varela get to third. Miguel Montero would fly one to center, Varela tagged up and scored from third for the second run. Jeff Cook was then intentionally walked. Rodrigues then got both Lino Garcia and Brian Rose on strikes to end the inning.
The Cougars had a couple of early chances. In the first inning, Luke Appert doubled to right with one out. Brian Snyder then walked. Eddie Kim then would hit into the inning ending double play. In the second inning they would get two more runners on, this time with two outs. Nick Rogers though would pop out to second to end the inning. In the third, again it would be two runners on with one out. Appert had reached on a dropped third strike/wild pitch. Snyder singled to right. Kim would reach on a fielder's choice, with Snyder being out at second. David Harriman struck out to end the inning.
Finally in the fourth inning they would break through with a run. Dustin Majewski led off with a single to center, and would get to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Brown struck out. Luis Perez then singled to center to score Majewski.
Now the horrible inning. Rodriguez would be done after four innings. Justin Crowder then came on for the fifth inning. Alberto Gonzalez greated him with a single to left. Jon Kaplan bunted him over to second. Emilo Bonafacio was intentionally walked. Edgar Varela singled to right to score Gonzalez. Augie Murilo followed with a single to right to score Bonafacio. Montero then also singled to right, this time Varela scored. Jeff Cook would hit a three run homer to center. Crowder then finally came out of the game.Brigmer Leon came in. He got Garcia to ground out to third for the second out. Brian Rose then took him deep to right center for a solo shot. Gonzalez singled to short. Kaplan would ground out to first to end a miserable inning.
South Bend added another run in the seventh inning. With one out Rose walked. He would get to second on a wild pitch from Jairo Garcia. Gonzalez followed with a ground out to second, on the play Rose went ot third. One pitch later, anohter wild pitch would bring him home. Kaplan would end the inning by looking at strike three. Luke Appert led off the seventh inning with a walk. Brian Snyder then hit one over the left center field deck in the bottom of the seventh but it wouldn't be enough.

This Day In Cougars History (May 31st)
1995, Walter Miranda throws a seven inning complete game three hitter but a pair of unearned runs are costly as the Cougars rally from a 4-1 deficit and salvage the split with an 8-7 win in game two. Todd Cady's three run double is the bog hit for the Cougars.
2000, Marc Sauer went to 4-1 as the Cougars scored all of their runs in the fourth in a 5-2 win over Burlington. In the fourth seven consecitive batters reach base on two doubles a single, and four walks
