Kane County Cougars at West Michigan White Caps
Wednesday, June 12th, 2002
Fifth Third Bank Field, Comstock Park, Michigan

A great pitching duel came out of this game as both sides were up to the task of putting up zeros ont he scoreboard. Both bullpens did a nice job in that department.

Phil Akens had a great outing, he went six innings. Phil gave up four hits and one run. Akens walked one and struck out five. Akens retired the first five Caps he faced, striking out the first two.

Akens got out of some trouble in the second inning. Juan Tejada led off with a pop up to short. Don Kelly then walked. Alfredo Lugo doubled to left to get Kelly to third, with one out. Jeremy Brostrom then popped out to left. Mike Rodelo then struck out to end the inning.

More trouble in the third inning for Akens. Jason Knoedler led things off with a bunt single back to the mound. Juan Francia then singled to left. Juan Gonzalez pit down a good sacrifice bunt and got the runners over. David Mattle hit one to second, Kris Clute got to the ball around second base on the dive, and got up and threw the ball, from around the short stop positon to get the out. On the play Knoedler would score, but if Clute didn't make the play the Caps would've scored more than just one run in the inning.

Andy Warren started for the Caps and pitched well, he went seven innings, giving up four hits and one run. Warrens problem was walks, as he gave out four free passes. He struck out two Cougars.

The Cougars offense sputterd again. In the first inning they had a chance to take an early lead and just couldn't capitalize on a WhiteCap error. Charles Frazier led the game off with a double to left. Kris Clute got him to third with the sacrifice bunt. Paco Ferrand then grounded one back to Warren and he threw the ball too high for the first baseman to keep his foot on the base, so he tried to tag him, and Ferrand was called safe. White Caps manager Phil Regan made a big fuss over that play and problly was trying to get himself thrown out of the game, but didn't. Michael Tucker then popped out to first. Hunter Wyant then struck out to end the inning.

With one out in the third inning Charles Frazier was hit in the elbow by a pitch. Kris Clute then walked. Men on first and second and one out. Ferrand grounded into the rally killing double play to end the inning.

The Whitecaps just kept on giving the Cougars chances to win the game, or to at least take a lead, but they couldn't do anything with them. In the fourth inning with two outs they tried again. Scott Hicks walked, then stole second, and was hit by the ball, thrown by the catcher. The ball went into centerfield and Hicks would get to third. Winton Zapay then walked. First and third two outs, Rex Rundgren struck out to end the inning.

The Cougars did have a couple of positive things go for them offensivly. Clute did a nice job with a sacrifice bunt. Michael Tucker had two hits, and scored the Cougars only run. Hunter Wyant drove home the only run with a double, his only hit. Scott Hicks had one hit, and two walks out of his three plate appearances.

In the sixth inning the Cougars would get one run. With one out, Michael Tucker singled to left, then stole second. Hunter Wyant doubled to left to score Tucker. Wyant would get greedy and try for a triple but would be tagged out easily.

The bullpens did a great job today. John Skinner contiuned his dominating performance this month. He threw one perfect inning. In the ninth he had a little problem. With two outs Juan Gonzalez walked. Gonzalez would get to second on a balk, and tro third on a wild pitch. David Mattle then grounded back to Skinner for the final out. Kevin Cave did a nice job for two innings, then had trouble in the eleventh.

West Michigan's bullpen was amazing. They retired 15 in a row. John Birtwell threw three perfect innings, striking out five. Mike Kobow then came in and threw an inning, giving up only one hit.

In the eleventh the Whitecaps would win the game. With one out, Juan Gonzalez walked. David Mattle then singled to left to get Gonzalez to second. Juan Tejada who had been 0-15 in the series then came up. He singled to left, Ferrand got to the ball and threw home. The throw bounced and was a tough one to controll. Catcher Winton Zapay couldn't handle it and Gonzalez would score to win the game for the Whitecaps.
