As many times a Clinton tried to give it away, the Quad City River Bandits couldn't grab a victory Wednesday night at John O'Donnell Stadium.
The LumberKings committed seven error, but found a 5-4, 11 inning Midwest League victory as easy as a walk in the park.
Travis Bowyer, seeing his first action since joining the Quad City pitching staff a day earlier, walked four batters in the 11th inning to allow Clinton to secure the win.
"Talk about winning ugly, man,", LumberKings manager Dave Machemer said. "That 'W' makes it taste a little better, though. It's a little easier to stomach with a win."
The RiverBandits, losing for the fifth time in six games this season, found it all a little hard to swallow after rallying for single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to force extra innings.
It was what could have been that frustrated Quad City manager Jeff Carter.
"Sometimes I think we've been trying to out think ourselves." Carter said, whose lineup card included, just two batters batting better than .125.
"Instead of keeping things simple, we've got guys trying to do too much. Hit the baseball, Catch the baseball, throw the baseball, it's about the simple."
Quad City managed seven hits in the game, and Carter believes he is starting to see better at bats from a team that is off to a .140 start at the plate this season.
"That's encouraging, but we've got to bear down and play nine innings," Carter said, "We're playing to or three innings of ball, and that doesn't work."
The RiverBandits were a combined 1 for 12 at the plate with runners in scoring position and left the bases loaded after tying the game a 4-4, with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch hit sinlge by Digno Torres.
Christoper Schroder struck out the final two batters in the eighth inning that was extended by a pair of Clinton errors.
Mistakes by Clinton (3-1) led to three of the RiverBandits' runs.
J.C. Contreras and Matt Vorwald provided the RiverBandits with 5 2/3 innings of solid relief. The pair combined to strike out nine and did not walk a batter while giving up only four hits.
"They kept us in it," Carter said, "Contreras did a good job and Vorwald wanted the ball. He worked fast, threw strikes and gave us an opportunity to win the game. That's all a pitcher can do."
Notes
After sitting three days because of rain and wet grounds, Clinton Lumberkings manager Dave Machemer didn't expect perfection.
He didn't expect seven errors either.
"We apparently had a few cobwebs to get rid of tonight." Machemer said. "Taking a couple of days off can make it tough."
Three of Clinton's errors were the result of errant throws by pitchers, and area where Machemer said his team must imrove.
"Guys have to want to help themselves, and that didn't happen there," said Machemer, whoe team had made just six errors in it's first three games.
An errant throw to second base, a droped fly ball and a droped pop up, as well as a fielding error at first resulted in the Lumberkings other errors.
"We've got a little work to do, but with better weather we can get some work in." Machemer said.
Clinton's entire three game series against Beloit, the Lumberking' scheduled home opening series, was postponed by inclement weather.
While games will be made up during a string of three straight double headers in Beloit on May 6-8. Clinton now is scheduled to open it's home schedule Saturday with a 2pm game against Cedar Rapids.
Homecoming
Former Davenport Assumption prep Greg Thissen went 0 for 3 in his John O'Donnell Stadium homecoming.
The Clinton second baseman batting in the No. 2 spot in the Lumberkings order, reached on an error, walked twice and recorded a sacrifice that helped lead to a seventh inning run.
Twice As Nice
After hitting just two extra base hits through the first five games of the season, Quad City belted three doubles Wednesday.
Kaulana Kuhaulua, Kenny Huff and Joe Mauer all collected two base hits as part of the River Bandits seven hit effort.
"That's a good sign." manager Jeff Carter said, "We hit the ball hard tonight, and I think that's a sign of guys having a better approach at the plate."
Roster Move
Quad City has made it's first roster move of the 2002 season.
Right handed pitcher Travis Bowyer has been added to the River Bandits roster, replacing Brian Gates.
Bowyer was a 20th round pick of the Twins in the 1999 draft who prepped at Liberty (VA) High School.
Gates made two relief appearances for Quad City before being sidelined because of a strained right bicep.
