Every team has to loose a game every now and then, the imporant thing is that the Cougars came back and scored two runs to give them a shot to try to get the win in the bottom of the ninth just like yesterday. The Cougars are now 4-1 on the young season, and are tied for first place in their divison.
David Castillo led off the eighth inning by reaching on an error by third baseman Ben Pattee. On the play the ball hit off the glove and rolled awhile. Eddie Kim then singled to left to get Castillo to second. Brian Snyder would line one off of the pitchers glove for a single to load the bases with nobody out. Dustin Majewski struck out. David Harriman singled to right to score Castillo to break the shutout. Luke Appert then pitch hit for Kory Wayment. Appert hit a sacrifice fly to center that would allow Kim to tag up and rumble home for the second run. Danny Gibbons then pitch hit for Chris Tritle, Gibbons would pop up to the first baseman to end the inning.
The Cougars were lucky to be only down one run in the late innings. In the eighth with one out against Manny Rodriguez, Kyle Phillips would walk. Pattee then grounded one back to the pitcher, Phillips would make second on the play. Sam Taylor grounded out to first to end the inning. In the ninth Matt Moses walked to lead things off. Brock Peterson lined out to center. Phillips walked to put runners on first and second with only one out. Pattee would then line out ot right. The Cougars then brought in Drew Freidberg to pitch to Taylor. Freidberg got Taylor to ground into a fielder's choice with Phillips being out at second to end the inning.
Things just didn't start out well for the Cougars and their starter Steve Bondurant. Int he second inning Peterson singled to center. Phillips then hit one off of the right field wall for a double. Ben Patte would single to second, I originally gave him an error on the play but oh well. On the play Peterson would score. Sam Taylor popped up to second. Alex Garcia then struck out. Ryan Spataro beat out a grounder to short for a single. on the play Phillips would score. Denard Span reached on a fielder's choice, on the play Spataro would be out at second to end the inning.
More trouble for the Cougars in the third inning when they gave up another run to the Swing. Scott Whitrock would be out trying to reach on a bunt on the first pitch. Matt Moses lined out to right for the second out. Brock Peterson singled to left. Phillips would then walk, which ment runners would be on first and second with two outs. Pattee blooped one into left for a single, on the play Peterson scored. Taylor would walk to load the bases. Alex Garcia then popped up to short to finally end the inning.
Kane County had its chances to get runs but couldn't take advantage of a lot of runners on base. In the first Perez would single to right with one out. A double play would cancel that threat. In the second inning Brian Snyder walked with one out, a pop out and a strike out wouldn't admount to nothing. The third inning was there best chance till the eighth. Kory Wayment reached on a bunt single to first. Chris Tritle would strike out for the first out. Brian Ingram walked, followed by Luis Perez striking out for the second out. David Castillo walked to load the bases. Eddie Kim would continue to try to pull the ball and would ground out to second to end the inning.
Majewski walked with one out in the fourth. That was followe by a David Harriman single to left. Wyament and Tritle then were both caught looking for the final two outs of the inning. Another runner on in the fifth, this time with two outs. The first two outs were by strike out. Eddie Kim would finish that off by striking out to end the inning. A leadoff single in the sixth by Snyder, followed by a fly to left. A pop to first and a strike out would ammount to nothing in the run department.
The Swing didn't do much better at getting runners home. After the three runs scored in the second and third they wouldn't get another runner home. In the fourth with one out Span singled to short and stole second. Whitcock grounded one off the shoulder of Wayment for a single. Moses then struck out and Peterson would be out on a fielder's choice. The sixth was more of the same, Garcia led off with a bunt single back to the pitcher. One out later Span singled to third. The Cougars then made a pitching change and brought in Dan Fyvie. He would strike out Whitrock, then get Moses to fly to center to end the inning.
In the seventh a one out walk would turn into nothing for the Swing. Both teams left double digit runners on base and the score shouldv'e been a lot higher. I think the wind had a big play in the score, since it was blowing straight in and since the flag was at times all the way unraveled, it made a diffrence. The cold weather also had something to do with it since it was in the 40's at game time.
