The Cougars earned a split in the series with the Kernels and a share of the lead in the western divison of the Midwest League. The wind was still blowing out and it affected play a little but the wind wasn't any where near as bad as it was yesterday, neither was the game. As both pitchers pitched pretty well.

Brad Knox started and went six innings, he pitched well in retiring the first eight in a row and nine of the first eleven. He only had one stumbling block and that was in the fifth when he gave up two of the three runs that he would give up in the game. Knox didnt walk a batter till the fifth inning and struck out nine. He hit two and gave up a homer in the fourth.

The bullpen shut things down also as Manny Rodriguez pitched two perfect innings, with two strike outs. Dan Fyvie would pitched the ninth and pick up the save with a perfect inning.

Things got off to a good start in the bottom of the first for the Cougars, with one out Luke Appert was hit by a pitch, then went to second on a wild pitch. David Castillo would pop out to first for the second out. Eddie Kim walked. David Harriman then singled to right to score Appert. On the throw in to home plate Kim went to third. Dustin Majewski would single to right to score Kim. Both runners then moved up a base on a wild pitch. Kory Wayment would then walk to load the bases. Chris Tritle flew to left to end the inning. The Cougars took the early lead two to nothing and things were looking great.

Things were looking awesome after the third when the Cougar scored two more runs to take a four run lead. Castillo led off the inning with a single to right. Kim popped out foul to third for the first out. Harriman would walk, on a full count. Had that pitch been called a strike it would've been a strike'em out, throw em out double play to end the inning. Majewski then struck out for the second out. Wayment then hit a triple off the wall in center to score both Castillo and Harriman. The centerfielder Quan Cosby almost made the catch but just missed the ball up against the wall. Tritle popped out to left to end the inning.

The Kernels didn't just roll over and die they fought back and made a game of it. In the fourth inning Matt Pali took a Knox pitch over the wall in center. In the fifth inning they would score the other two runs for them in the game. Bobby Wilson singled to led things off. Aaron Peel struc out. Tommy Duenas walked. Cosby then singeld to left to score both Wilson and Cosby. Howard Kendrick struck out for the second out. Sean Rodriguez then singled to left. Matt Pali would ground out to first to end the inning.

Cedar Rapids had only one other chance to score some runs in the game and that was in the third inning, when things got a little heated for no good reason. With two outs. Tommy Duenas get hit on the forearm or wrist by a ptich from Brad Knox. It was on a one ball, two strike pitch, Knox had a perfect game going untill then. Why would he hit him intentionally. Duenas thought he did and started yelling, both benches cleared and there were some yelling and screaming but nothing else. Cougars manager Dave Joppie and the home plate ump were talking after this and I guess no warning was issued from what I can tell, and he was wondering why, and if his pitchers would be able to pitch inside the rest of the game. The answer to pitching inside would be yes they would be able to. Cosby then comes up and singles to third. The Kernels had runners on first and second with two outs. At this time it was only a two to nothing game. Kendrick flies out to center to end the threat.

The Cougars also had an inning when they had a chance to put more runs up on the board, that inning would be the fourth. With one out Brian Ingram doubled to right. Luke Appert moved him to third by grounding out to first. Castillo would then strike out to end the inning.

In the eighth the Cougars had a chance also. Tritle led off with a double ot left. Luis Perez then sacrificed him over to third. Ingram would then reach on a fielder's choice. On the play the infield was playing in to cut off the runner at the plate. The second baseman Kendrick got the grounder and threw home to get Tritle at the plate. Appert would strike out to end the inning.

David Harriman did a nice job today as he was on base three out of the four times he came to the plate. he walked twice and had a run scoring single in the first. He scored two runs. Kory Wayment also was on base three out of the four times he came to the plate. He tripled, walked, and reached on a fielder's choice. He would drive home two runs. Tritle got two hits, both doubles.
