Kane County Cougars at Cedar Rapids Kernels


May 23rd, 2004

In a wild game that would ultimatly be decided in the final two innings in the Kernels favor. There were six homers in the game.

David Castillo hit a solo homer in the first with two outs to give then a lead. In the bottom of the inning the Kernels would also get a run. Quan Cosby would single to led things off. Howie Kendrick then singled to left to score Cosby.

In the third inning the Kernels would have some fun. With one out, Howie Kendrick hit a solo shot to center. Brandon Wood then took one to left. Caleb Maher would keep it in the park with his single to right. Matt Abram then took one to right for the third homer of the inning. After that the Cougars would take out Trent Peterson, and bring in Manny Rodriguez.

Tommy Duenas led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right field. With two outs, Kendrick doubled to center. Rodriguez would then get Wood to strike out to end the inning.

The fifth inning would see the Kernels score again. With one out Abram doubled to right. Blake Balkcom would then reach on a fielder's choice with Abram being out at third. The newest Cougar Justin Crowder would then come on to replace Rodriguez. Nick Kimpton then took a pitch to left for a triple, Balkcom would score. Duenas then struck out to end the inning.

Finally the Cougars would score some more runs, eventhough it was only two. With one out Luke Appert singled to right, then stole second, on strike three to David Castillo, which was the second out. Vasili Spanos doubled to right to score Appert. Brian Snyder then tripled to right to score Spanos. Cedar Rapids then made a pitching change, taking out Abel Moreno and bringin in Jesse Smith. Smith would get Dustin Majewski to pop out ot third to end the inning.

With those two runs by the Cougars the score was now, seven to three. It would be eight to three before the Cougars would score again. With one out in the sixth Cosby singled to center. Sean Rodriguez then pitch hit for Kendrick and singled to left. Wood then reached on a fielder's choice with Kendrick being out at second. Maher would then single to left to score Cosby. Dan Fyvie came ont o pitch to Abram, and would retire him to end the inning.

Trevor Brown led off the seventh inning by walking. After Chris Tritle got called out on strikes for the first out, Nick Rogers then reached on an error by the first baseman. Brian Ingram singled to right to load the bases. Appert would reach on a fielder's choice, on the play Ingram would be out at second, Brown would score.

At this point the game is eight to four for the Kernels. In the eighth inning the Kernels would score three more runs, to make it almost out of reach. Mike McGirr had come on to start the inning, to replace Fyvie. Aaron Peel led off with a walk, then stole second. Cosby and Rodriguez both struck out. Wood was intentionally walked. Maher would then ground one to third, Snyder's throw to second was low and would allow Peel to score. Abram popped one up behind first, both Appert and Brown couldn't get the ball and it fell in. Wood and Maher scored on the play.

The Cougars still would make a game out of it in the ninth by scoring four times. Tritle led off with a homer to left. Rogers walked. Ingram then singled to left. Apper grounded on to short, Ingram beat the throw to second. Aaron Pullin then came on to pitch for the Kernels to replace Smith. Castillo greated him with a single to right to score Rogers. Spanos hit one off of the pitchers glove that the short stop would get to and throw him out at first on. Ingram would score on the play. Snyder grounded to second for the second out, Appert scored. Majewski would ground to first to end the game.

Notes-Looking back a few years in score cards I could only find one more time that three homers were hit in one inning. I only looked back as far as 98. On April 7th, 2001, Josh Willingham lead off the seventh inning with a homer. Two outs later Will Smith and Adrian Gonzalez would hit back to back homers. All of the homers would come off of Peoria Chiefs pitcher Jeremy Cook. In the game the Cougars would loose 13-11
