South Bend SilverHawks at Kane County Cougars
May 29th, 2004
Can someone please explain the rules of baseball to the umps in the Midwest League? They obviously don't have a clue about them. Today we had two umps, one was a replacement ump, and was horrible. The regular ump wasn't much better.
In the seventh inning the Cougars had Luis Perez lead off with a single to left. Nick Rogers bunted him over to second. The Hawks then made a pitching change bring in Doug Slanton to replace starter Chris Kinsey. He got Luke Appert to ground out to second for the second out, on the play Perez moved into third base. David Castillo was then intentionally walked. The second pitch to Eddie Kim apparently hit him in the arm, but the ump said it didn't, which is nuts. Cougar manager Dave Joppie argued but eventually gave in the umps incompetenece. Two pitches later, on a two-two count. Kim apparently checks his swing, The base ump says that he foulded the ball off, the base ump is the regular ump. The home plate ump says he didnt and over rules him so Kim is down on strikes to end the inning. Joppie had had enough, and argued to the point of getting ejected for the first time this season. My question is - if the home plate ump had checked with the base ump on the check swing, why didnt he check with him on the hit by pitch, because if he did Kim wouldn't have been up there.
After that inning the game was tied a three, the Hawks would score three runs in the next half inning to win the game. The ump basically cost us a chance to win the game, because of his calls. The Cougars would score first in this game in the first inning. Rogers walked. Appert then followed with another walk. Castillo would line to right, Rogers tagged up and moved to third. Kim then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Rogers.
South Bend came back in the fourth to post a run to tie the game. Edgar Varela led off with a single to center. Augie Murillo then reached on a fielder' s choice, with Varela being out at second. Miguel Montero doubled to the left center field wall to allow Murillo to score. Lino Garcia was hit by a pitch, A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Jeff Cook would line to right for the second out. Brian Rose then grounded to third to end the inning.
The Hawks would score another run in the fifth inning to take the lead. With two outs Mike Goss singled to center. Emilo Bonafacio then tripled to center to score Goss. Bonafacio can really fly round the bases. Varela then poped out to left for the second out. Murillo would line to right.
Taking over the lead in the bottom of the inning, the Cougars would score two runs. With one out, Luis Perez walked. Rogers then singled to left. Appert would reach on a fielder's choice with Rogers out at second. A wild pitch would move the runners up, with Perez scoring from third. Castillo then singled to left to score Appert.
Now the horrible inning, the eighth. The Hawks would score three runs to make it a 6 to 3 final. With two outs, both on bunt attempts that went back to the pitcher, the Cougars then made a pitching change. They brought in J.R. Pickens to replace Dan Fyvie. During the change, Kim got into it with the base ump and would be ejected. Like I said these umps were horrible. Jon Kaplan then pitch hit for Jeff Cook when play resumed. He would walk, then steal second. Rose singled just past third base. Cook would score, and on a high throw home, Rose would take second. The left fielder Perez would get an error on the throw. Alberto Gonzalez then tripled to center to score Rose. Goss would line one off of the glove of Brian Snyder at short, ont he play Gonzalez would score. Goss then stole second. Bonafacio would get caught looking at strike three to end the inning.
