The BattleCats scored four runs in the third inning and held on for a 4-2 victory over the host Quad City River Bandits in a Midwest League base game Thursday night at scenic John O'Donnell Stadium. It was the fourth straight victory for the Cats who stayed atop the Eastern Division standings with the win.
Cats starter Mike Burns picked up the win. Burns (4-4) went six innings, allowing two runs and four hits while walking two and striking out four. Mark Hamilton pitched two innings of scoreless relief. Scott Powell pitched the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
Ryan Stegall (walk) and Joe Lydic (infield single) led off the third for the Cats, and both moved up on sacrifice bunt by Mike Rodriguez. Brooks Conrad ripped a two run double and Todd Shelf followed with an RBI double for a 3-0 lead. Mark Obradovich laced a two out single to make it 4-0.
The Bandits (24-25) scored twice in the fifth. Garrett Jones led off the inning with a homer. Barry Quickstad followed with a double and later scored on a groundout.

One shaky pitching inning, one key hit that isn't delievered and pretty soon, you've got a five game losing streak.
That is the situation the Quad City River Bandits find themselves in as they tied their longest losing skid of the season Thursday night with a 4-2 loss to the Michigan Battle Cats at John O'Donnell Stadium.
"That's the way it's been going for us. We can't get the big hits when we need them," River Bandits manager Jeff Carter said after his team slipped below .500 for the first time in two weeks. "We've got young guys and young guys don't always know how to get out of a losing streak."
"You just have to be patient and keep working hard. We're working hard."
The one unsteady inning in an otherwise good effort by starting pitcher Manny Tejada was the Michigan third.
Tejada, who was 2-0 in his first two starts with the River Bandits, gave up four hits, including consecutive doubles to Brooks Conrad and Todd Shelf.
Conrad drove in a pair of runs and Shelf drove in Conrad and later scored on Mark Obradovich's single. It was the only inning in which Tejada faced more than four batters in his 6 2/3 innings.
"He got a couple of pitches up over the strike zone in one inning. Otherwise, he had a pretty good night," Carter said.
Tejada struck out seven and allowed just one walk. Two of the strikeouts came against Michigan's Steve Checksfield, who had rocked QC pitching the first two nights of the four game series that ends tonight.
The Bandits scored their only runs in the fifth.
Garrett Jones, playing just his second game with Quad City, drove a ball well over the right field wall to lead off the inning.
Barry Quickstad followed with a double, and he eventually scored on a bunt and a ground out.
In the sixth, the River Bandits got a two out double from Michael Sandoval but couldn't get the key hit to pull within a run.
Jason Kubel, the player who struck out behind Sandoval in the sixth, doubled with two outs in the ninth. Jones then popped up behind the plate.
"Jones has got some pop in his bat. In time he's going to learn the strike zone," Carter said.

Ryan Stegall drew a leadoof walk. Joe Lydic singled. Mike Rodriguez advanced Stegall to third with a ground ball. Brooks Conrad drove in two runs with a double to deep right. Todd Shelf doubled to right, scoring Conrad. Mark Obradovich drove in the fourth run with a two out single.
Quad City 5th
Garrett Jones led off the inning with a home run to right. Barry Quickstad doubled to right center. Jake Mauer advanced Quickstad to third with a bunt. Mauer scored on James Tomlin's ground ball for the second out. Kaulana Kuhaulua struck out to end the inning.
