COUGARS FREEZE KERNELS
The Cougars froze the Kernels, in from of just over two thousand freezing
Cougar fans at the Elf. Good pitching and an inning when we did somehting diffrent, we actually
had a Cougar cross home plate. All of that combined helped to bring the Cougars their second win in
a row.
Dontrelle Willis got his first victory of the season, after going his
first three starts without a decsion. He lasted five innings, and 84 pitches. Dontrelle
allowed four hits, no more than one hit an inning. He gave up one run after the runner got on
with a walk. Willis did walk four, which is the first time in his three starts that he walked
more than one. He struck out eight, which is the most he has struck out this year. He started out
twelve of the twenty-one hitters he faced with a strike. Of those he didn't get a first pitch strike
three of the four walks were the result of the time at-bat.
The bullpen did it's job, Elvis DeJesus pitched three innings, he was a little bit wild. He threw 49 pitches, with 30 strikes.
Elvis gave up one hit and one walk. He also struck out three. Kevin Cave came in for the save in the
ninth he got the side down in order, including getting one strikeout.
Cedar Rapids also got good pitching, Jaime Steward started and lasted into
the sixth inning. He gave up two hits and two unearned runs. He walked two and struck out
two. He threw 80 pitches, Steward retired the first seven Cougars he faced.
The scoring started in the third inning for the Kernels when with one out, Jon Cahill walked.
He would advance to second on a wild pitch. Ransel Melgarejo then flied out to center. Dallas
McPherson singled to left to score Cahill.
In the fifth inning the Cougars offense finally did something. Jason Stokes
led things off with a double to left. Heath Kelly put down a nice sacrifice
bunt to move Stokes to third. Charles Frazier walked. Guy Lynam then hit one back to the pitcher, Steward.
He tried to throw the ball home to get Stokes but threw the ball to the
back stop to allow Stokes to score the Cougars first run of the game. Rex Rundgren then
grounded into a fielder's choice, on the play Frazier would score, and Lynam would be out
at second.
