Peoria Chiefs at Kane County Cougars
Monday, July 1st, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Some things never change, the Cougars get blasted again. It seems
like this a reacuring nighmare of a season. Is this ground hog day the
movie or just the sequel to the movie?
The Chiefs pounded out 20 hits, yes 20 and 11 runs. The Cougars did
score six runs on six hits. The most amazing part is that the Cougars
only got the six runs. The Chiefs did make six errors to the Cougars
two.
Jason Stokes was the Cougars biggest star of the night as he hit
two homers. This makes 17 on the year. Jason is two homer up on the
record holder Jim Kavourias's pace set last year. At this point Jim
had 15 homers. Kavourias hit two homers on the 4th of July then did not
hit another homer untill the 12th of July. Stokes is only seven homers
away from the record of 23.
Phil Akens started and did not last long in this game as he got
shelled. Phil got his 11th loss of the year, this makes him second in
the league in losses. Akens lasted four innings. He gave up 12 hits, and
eight runs.
The Chiefs scored five runs in the second inning and just never
looked back. John Nelson led it off with a single to center. Chase
Voshell then singled to left. Yadier Molina bunted the runners over. Rick
Asadoorian then singled to left to score Nelson. Asadoorian stole second.
Shaun Boyd hit a fly to center, Voshell would score on the sacrifice fly.
Jesse Roman then walked. Tim Lemon singled to left to score Asadoorian.
Chris Duncan doubled to right to score both Roman and Lemon.
The Cougars did roar back with one run in the bottom of the inning. Jason
Stokes led off with a homer over the scoreboard in left center.
In the third inning the Cougars scored again. Dennis Anderson led
off the inning with a homer to center field for his third of the season.
Rex Rundgren then struck out. Kris Clute walked. Peoria catcher Molina
tried to pickoff Clute at first and threw the ball down the line in right.
Clute would make it to third. Jason Helps then struck out. Charles Frazier
then lined one to third. The thirdbaseman Gabe Johnson had the ball go
off his glove. On the play Clute would score. Frazier would get to second
on a wild pitch. He would then get to third on a balk. Jason Stokes then
came up and struck out to end the inning.
Jesse Roman led off the fourth with a single to center. Tim Lemon then
singled to left. Chris Duncan hit one on the roof of the deck in right
field.
The Cougars had a chance in the bottom of the inning. Scott Hicks
led off with a single to center. Michael Tucker then singled to left. George
Arnott lined out to center. Dennis Anderson ground out to first. Rex Rundgren
then fouled out to first.
With two outs in the fifth for the Cougars Charlie Frazier walked. Jason
Stokes then hit one off of the top of the scoreboard in left centerfield for
his 17th homer of the season.
Gabe Johnson singled to right with one out in the sixth. He was
then caught stealing by catcher Anderson. John Nelson would then get
on base from a dropped third strike/wild pitch combo. Chase Voshell singled
to left. Yadier Molina singled to center to score Nelson. Voshell would
get caught between second and third and would be tagged out to end the
inning.
Two more runs for the Chiefs in the seventh basically sealed the
game for Peoria. With two outs Jesse Roman hit a homer onto the deck
in right field. Tim Lemon singled to center. Chris Duncan then doubled
to center to score Lemon.
The Cougars would not give up, in the eighth inning they scored one
run. Scott Hicks would reach on an error by the first baseman. On the play
the ball was hit to the first baseman. He tried to throw to the pitcher
who was running over to cover the bag. The throw was low and got away. The
catcher back him up and threw the ball into center field. Hicks would
get to third. Michael Tucker grounded out to short to score Hicks.
