South Bend Silver Hawks at Kane County Cougars

The Cougars lost this game with their performance in the first and the last innings. Those are the only inning that the Hawks scored in, and they scored seven runs total. The Cougars only scored five runs. They scored three in the bottom of the ninth. This gave the Silver Hawks the series, they won three out of the four games. South Bend is the worst team in the league.

Jared Ball led off the game with a single to left. Bryan Loeb singled to right. Scott Hairston then doubled off the wall to right to allow Ball to score. Dan Callahan struck out. Kyle Nichols doubled to left to score both Loeb and Hairston. Hicks' relay throw to second almost got Nichols. Phil Akens then did a nice job to get out of the inning. He struck out Jay Garthwaite and Sean Luellwitz.Phil Akens started for the Cougars and lasted five innings. He walked only one and struck out seven.
Arizona's first round pick from last year started, Jason Bulger pitched five innings, giving up four hits. He gave up one hit, which was unearned. Bulger walked three and struck out nine. In the first inning, William Arroyo singled to right, then he stole second. On the steal, Kris Clute struck out fdr the first out. Jason Stokes then came up, the leagues leading hitter. He struck out. Angel Molina then struck out to end the inning. Basically the same thing hapend in the second inning. George Arnott doubled to center to lead off the inning. Scott Hicks then struck out for the first out. Franco Blackburn walked. Rex Rundgren and Anthony Brewer then struck out, to end the inning.

The game would stay that way untill the fifth, With one out Charles Frazier walked. Kris Clute then reached on an error by the thrid baseman, on the play Frazier went to third.. Kris Clute then took of and stole second, it was a double steal and Frazier would steal home. In the third inning Jason Stokes was hit by a pitch right on the elbow and was taken out of the game. Michael Tucker came in to pitch hit since Stokes was the designated hitter. Tucker walked in the fifth. Angle Molina singled to left. The inning would end when Arnott struck out.

The Cougars would cut the lead down to one when the scored another run in the sixth. With two outs Rex Rundgren would reach on an infield single to the pitcher. Anthony Brewer walked. William Arroyo singled to center to score Rundgren. The Hawks would then make a pitchng change. Clute struck out to end the inning.

In the ninth inning the Cougars fell apart. Dan Uggla walked. Rick Haydelll put down a sacrifice bunt. Pitcher Manuel Esquivia picked the bal up threw the ball into right field. Jared Ball then grounded out to short, on the play Uggla scored. Bryan Loeb would reach on an error by third baseman Michael Tucker. On the play the ball jumped over his glove as he tried to make a backhanded stab at it, Haydell would score. Scott Hairston doubled to left to score Loeb. Dan Callahan singled to center to score Hairston. Esquivia then calmed down and got the final two outs of the inning. Nichols popped out to right. Garthwaite struck out.

The Cougars would not go away. They would make a game of it in their final at-bat. Anthony Brewer led off by being hit by a pitch. William Arroyo walked. Kris Clute lined out to right. Jason Stokes then doubled to left to score both Brewer and Arroyo. Angel Molina struck out. George Arnott was hit by a pitch. Scott Hicks singled to left. The Hawks then brought in a new pitcher. Franco Blackburn grounded one to third. The third baseman threw wide of first. Hicks went to second and rounded the bag way to far and the throw from the first baseman to second got Hicks out to end the game.

This Day In Cougars History

95, After trailing the Quad City River Bandits 9-1, the Cougars rally in the 8th and 9th, but still fall short as the Bandits hold on for a 9-7 win.

98, In the completion of a game halted by rain a day earlier, the Ft. Wayne Wizards get 10 hits and score 6 runs off Todd Noel and go on to crush the Cougars by a 10-1 score. The former Cubs #1 draft pick was making his first appearance with the Cougars after being acquired from Chicago for Marlins left hander and former Cougars, Felix Heredia.
