Quad City River Bandits at Kane County Cougars
Tuesday, August 27th, 2002
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
The Cougars lost a game that they just couldn't get that one or two
big hits when they needed it with runners on to allow them to score. They
are still tied with Burlington for the wild card, eventhough they need
to be ahead of them, since they lost the series to the Bees. Clinton is
two games back.
The game was decided in the tenth inning. With one out Matt Abram
walked. He would get to second on a passed ball. Garrett Jones then singled
to left to score Abram and put the Bandits ahead by one.
The Cougars would actually start the scoring in the game. In the
first inning, Eric Reed reached on an infield single to short. He just
beat out the throw. He would get to second on a balk. Kris Clute struck
out. Reed would the steal third. Michael Tucker walked. Winton Zapey
doubled to left. That brought home Reed. Tucker would try to score but
would be cut down at the plate. Phil Hartig then lined out to the short
stop.
Phil Akens started for the Cougars. He went six innings, giving up
seven hits and three runs. Akens gave up his first run in the second inning.
In the second the Bandits scored a run. Stephen Tope walked. Bryan
Kennedy popped up to left. Matt Abram singled to left. Garrett Jones
struck out. Brett Tamurrino singled to right to score Tope to tie the
game. Tamburrino would then steal second. Seth Davidson popped up foul
to third to end the inning.
Another run by the Bandits in the next inning would give them the
lead. With one out Michael Sandoval tripled to center. Jason Kubel struck
out. Tope singled to center to bring home Sandoval.
Quad City just kept getting one run an inning. In hte fourth they
would score another. Abram singled to right. Jones then followed with
a single to right. Tamburrino moved the runners along with a bunt. Davidson
grounded out to short, on the play Abram would score to put the Bandits
up two runs.
Akens would eventually get out of trouble, in the fifth with out
giving up anymore runs. Kubel led off with a single. Tope grounded one
behind second, short stop Rex Rundgren grabbed the ball, and stepped on
second. Only one problem Kubel beat him there. Rundgren then threw to
first to get Tope. Bryan Kennedy lined out to right, on the play Kubel
tagged up and got to third. Abram then grounded one sharply to third
baseman Michael Tucker, he made a nice play to get the ball then throw
him out at first to end the inning.
Kane County would find their bats in the sixth and use them to help
them score a couple of runs. Anthony Brewer singled to center. Reed would
reach on an error by first baseman Tope. Clute then put down a sacrifice
bunt. Only one problem it went too close to the pitcher, and he threw
Brewer out at third. Michael Tucker then doubled to left to score Reed.
Zapey would reach on an error by third baseman Sandoval. On the play the
ball just deflected off his glove back into the infield. The Bandits
then made a pitching change. The Twins second round pick from this year
Jesse Crain came in to replace Colby Miller. Phil Hartig then hit the
first pitch to right for the second out. Scott Hicks then grounded out
to first to end the inning.
Manuel Esquivia came in for the seventh inning. He got out of some
trouble in his inning of work. Jake Mauer led off with a walk. Sandoval
then lined out to right. Kubel walked. Tope flied to center, Mauer tagged
and went to third. Kennedy then grounded out to short to end the inning.
The Bandits took the led in the eighth off of Cougars reliever Kevin Cave. Abram singled to left. They
would bring in Trent Oeltijen to pitch run. Jones put down a bunt to
move him over to second. Tamburrino struck out. Davidson doubled to right.
Oeltijen would score, but from what I saw he missed the base then was
tagged, then he tagged the base after sliding around the base. Mauer
then grounded out to second to end the inning.
Eric Reed led off the eighth with a single to left. Clute tried
to move him over, but he popped up a bunt to first for the first out.
Reed then stole second. Tucker would reach when he hit a liner to first,
the first baseman knocked the ball down and it trickled over to short,
the throw from short was late and Tucker was safe. On the play Reed
would score. Zapey grounded out to third. Hartig was then hit on the
arm by a pitch. The Bandits made a pitching change, Matt Vorwald came on.
Hicks walked to load the bases with two outs. William Arroyo grounded
out to second to end the inning.
The Cougars would have a chance to tie in the tenth. Clute led off
by reaching on an infield single to short, the throw from short was late.
He would get to second on a wild pitch. Tucker lined out to right, on the
play Clute would tag up and get to third. Zapey grounded one over to
first. The first baseman threw to the the third baseman and they had
Clute in a rundown. He would eventually be tagged out, and Tucker would
get to second. Hartig grounded out to second to end the game.
